The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is committed to recruiting trainees into all of our programs – residency and fellowships. We respect and value the uniqueness each individual brings to our department. In addition, we are committed to creating and sustaining an inclusive learning and clinical environment. Our mission is to train knowledgeable, skilled, and compassionate obstetricians and gynecologists to improve the health and well-being of all the patients and families we serve. We care for diverse populations across our teaching sites and provide exceptional care to everyone.
We strive to promote the development of our trainees in an environment where our colleagues demonstrate professionalism, enhance learning, and foster personal and professional sustainability. We seek to develop the leaders of tomorrow who will not only be compassionate, evidence-based care providers, but also fierce patient advocates.
The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology is proud to partner with the Office of Inclusive Excellence in the School of Medicine and the Graduate Medical Education (GME) community at UNC Health Care to support its trainees and promote a community of inclusion and respect. Specific events from this partnership include:

Carolina First Look

Carolina First Look is an annual opportunity for medical students who are preparing for the residency application process to visit the UNC School of Medicine & Health Care System to learn more about available specialty medical programs for residents. The event, which is coordinated by the Office of Inclusive Excellence, is an important part of our annual recruiting process. Our involvement includes obstetric and surgical simulations; mock interviews; and large group and one-on-one time with our residents, fellows, and faculty so potential applicants can get a sense of why we all chose Carolina.

Carolina Second Look

Carolina Second Look is an opportunity for medical students who have interviewed for residency at UNC to return to Chapel Hill as they prepare for the residency selection process. Also coordinated by the Office of Inclusive Excellence, Carolina Second Look gives us a chance to share our time and space with applicants beyond the interview day. We coordinate clinical shadowing, pair interested applicants with potential research mentors, and enjoy the good food of Franklin Street.

Larry D. Keith Visiting Student Elective

Visiting student electives can be an invaluable experience. The Larry D. Keith Visiting Student Electives Scholarship serves to supplement the cost of this training opportunity for medical students and those committed to serving in underserved communities.

All scholarship recipients will complete a 4-week rotation in a chosen elective, meet with the respective program directors, and have informal as well as formal opportunities to meet with faculty and resident mentors at the UNC SOM.
