Global Health Scholar: Ashley Appiagyei, MD MPH
Ashley Appiagyei, MD MPH, Global Health Scholar, 2020-22
Prior to medical school, I had the privilege to work in global health for several years, and that was something I was passionate about continuing as an OB/GYN. The Global Health Scholars Program at UNC was a significant draw for me when it came to ranking residency programs. With the support of the scholarship, I have been supported to conduct research through UNC-Project Malawi under my mentor Dr. Jennifer Tang, evaluating pharmacologic interactions between Efavirenz-based antiretroviral drug regimens and the widely used levonorgestrel implant among HIV-infected women in Malawi. In addition to covering travel expenses during my time in Malawi, my funding through the program will also support presentation of my research at scientific conferences as well as refresher training in Biostatics and research methods.
