UNC Maternal-Fetal Medicine provides specialty care to families with complicated or “high risk” pregnancies. Complications in pregnancy can arise due to maternal conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease, or can occur due to the development of obstetric conditions such as preterm labor or preeclampsia. In addition, Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist provide high-level diagnostic and potentially therapeutic approaches to the management of fetal conditions. Maternal-Fetal Medicine providers most often work in conjunction with the patient’s primary OB provider to assist in management of specific issues or may provide complete prenatal and delivery care.
