{"id":333,"date":"2023-06-16T03:13:39","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T03:13:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/?page_id=333"},"modified":"2023-09-20T13:23:58","modified_gmt":"2023-09-20T13:23:58","slug":"amniocentesis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/maternal-fetal-medicine\/fetal-care-center\/procedures\/amniocentesis\/","title":{"rendered":"Amniocentesis"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"HwSubSectionTitle \">What is an amniocentesis?<\/h2>\n<p>Amniocentesis is a test to look at the fluid that surrounds your baby (<span class=\"HwLinkText\">fetus<\/span>) in the\u00a0<span class=\"HwLinkText\">uterus<\/span>.\u00a0<span class=\"HwLinkText\">Amniotic fluid<\/span>\u00a0has cells and other<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1360\/2023\/06\/Amnicentesis-300x217.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1360\/2023\/06\/Amnicentesis-300x217.png 300w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1360\/2023\/06\/Amnicentesis.png 509w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> substances that can give clues about the health of your fetus.<\/p>\n<p>For this test, a needle is put gently through your belly into your uterus. About\u00a0<span class=\"Measurement\">2 Tbsp (30 mL)<\/span>\u00a0of fluid is taken out and looked at.<\/p>\n<p>This test may be done between weeks 15 and 20 to look at the baby\u2019s genes. It can also be used later in pregnancy.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"HwSubSectionTitle \">Amniocentesis for Genetic Testing<\/h2>\n<p>Amniocentesis is often done around week 16 to see if a fetus has certain genetic conditions. It can also tell the sex of a fetus and help find certain neural tube defects.<\/p>\n<p>Amniotic fluid has cells that have been shed by your growing fetus. The cells are checked for the number and size of\u00a0<a class=\"HwLinkDefinition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncmedicalcenter.org\/app\/healthwise\/document.aspx?navigationNode=\/2\/38\/2\/&amp;id=stc17210#stc17210-sec\" rel=\"Definition\" data-hwid=\"stc17210\"><span class=\"HwLinkText\">chromosomes<\/span><\/a>. This can show if there are any problems that put the baby at risk for certain conditions, such as\u00a0<a class=\"HwLinkDefinition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncmedicalcenter.org\/app\/healthwise\/document.aspx?navigationNode=\/2\/38\/2\/&amp;id=std120885#std120885-sec\" rel=\"Definition\" data-hwid=\"std120885\"><span class=\"HwLinkText\">Down syndrome<\/span><\/a>. But this test can\u2019t find many common birth defects, such as\u00a0<a class=\"HwLinkDefinition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncmedicalcenter.org\/app\/healthwise\/document.aspx?navigationNode=\/2\/38\/2\/&amp;id=ue5449#ue5449-sec\" rel=\"Definition\" data-hwid=\"ue5449\"><span class=\"HwLinkText\">cleft lip<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"HwLinkDefinition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncmedicalcenter.org\/app\/healthwise\/document.aspx?navigationNode=\/2\/38\/2\/&amp;id=ue5450#ue5450-sec\" rel=\"Definition\" data-hwid=\"ue5450\"><span class=\"HwLinkText\">cleft palate<\/span><\/a>, or heart problems.<\/p>\n<p>Testing is most often done as soon as possible so women and their families have time to think about their options.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"HwSubSectionTitle \">Amniocentesis in Late Pregnancy<\/h2>\n<p>if your doctor thinks you could have an infection of the amniotic fluid (chorioamnionitis), your doctor may recommend this test be done later in pregnancy.<\/p>\n<h2\n\t         id=\"user\"\n\t         class=\"icon center fa-user\">Our Team<\/h2>\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-12 col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is an amniocentesis?
