{"id":1077,"date":"2019-03-29T17:47:28","date_gmt":"2019-03-29T17:47:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/2019\/03\/29\/dr-erin-careys-gynecologic-pain-project-wins-50000-innovation-award\/"},"modified":"2023-08-01T20:42:52","modified_gmt":"2023-08-01T20:42:52","slug":"dr-erin-careys-gynecologic-pain-project-wins-50000-innovation-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/2019\/03\/29\/dr-erin-careys-gynecologic-pain-project-wins-50000-innovation-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Erin Carey\u2019s gynecologic pain project wins $50,000 innovation award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/directory\/erin-carey-md-mscr\/\">Erin Carey, MD,<\/a> director of the Division of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at UNC OB-GYN, is principle investigator for a project on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1360\/2023\/08\/Carey_2016.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4005\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1360\/2023\/08\/Carey_2016-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>gynecologic pain that has received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/innovation\/innovation-pilot-award\/\">2019 Innovation Pilot Award of $50,000 from the School of Medicine.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Her co-principle investigator is Dr. Rahima Benhabbour of The Department of Biomedical Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Their project is called, \u201cA Novel Drug-Delivery System for the Treatment of Vestibulodynia,\u201d and will focus on developing a new treatment for vestibulodynia.<\/p>\n<p>The award states: \u201cVestibulodynia (VBD) is a very common cause of sexual pain of reproductive aged women in the United States. One of the first-line treatments for VBD, topical lidocaine 5% ointment, cream or gel, is difficult to apply due to the content and lack of a directed delivery system. Innovative vestibule medication delivery systems are needed to permit longer, directed therapy. This project will be the first to apply a specialized thin film technology to the vulvar vestibule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/innovation\/innovation-pilot-award\/2019-innovation-pilot-awards\/\">offers internal pilot funding to UNC Health Care and UNC School of Medicine employees<\/a> for health care innovations.
