{"id":1086,"date":"2019-04-08T12:48:17","date_gmt":"2019-04-08T12:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/2019\/04\/08\/mersereau-to-lead-division-of-reproductive-endocrinology-and-infertility\/"},"modified":"2023-08-01T20:43:15","modified_gmt":"2023-08-01T20:43:15","slug":"mersereau-to-lead-division-of-reproductive-endocrinology-and-infertility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/2019\/04\/08\/mersereau-to-lead-division-of-reproductive-endocrinology-and-infertility\/","title":{"rendered":"Mersereau to lead Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/directory\/jennifer-mersereau\/\">Dr. Jennifer Mersereau<\/a> will become the next chief of UNC OB-GYN\u2019s Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) on May 1, 2019.\u00a0The division\u2019s longtime chief Dr. Marc Fritz has decided to step down after 26 years and will continue as a fulltime clinician and as practice director for <a href=\"http:\/\/uncfertility.com\">UNC Fertility<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8809\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 250px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/824\/2019\/04\/Mersereau-Tablet-Desktop-Main\u2013crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8809 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/obgyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/824\/2019\/04\/Mersereau-Tablet-Desktop-Main\u2013crop-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Jennifer Mersereau, MD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dr. Mersereau was recruited as an assistant professor to the REI faculty in 2007 based on her outstanding record of education and professional training at some of the most highly regarded institutions for the subspecialty, as well as on the strength of recommendations received from her distinguished mentors. She attended medical school at the University of Pittsburg and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University. She received her fellowship training in REI at the University of California San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mersereau\u2019s record since joining the faculty has been outstanding in every way.\u00a0She became director of the Fertility Preservation Program in 2008 and was appointed medical director of the Assisted Reproductive Technology Program in 2011. She has excelled in those roles, as demonstrated by the growth and success of the programs under her guidance and leadership.\u00a0She was promoted to associate professor in 2014 and has been recommended for promotion to the rank of professor.\u00a0Her promotion to the division\u2019s chief role is richly deserved, as she is recognized for excellence as a clinician, educator and academician.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJenny is recognized as an engaging, enthusiastic and effective teacher at every level, including her faculty physician colleagues, fellow and resident trainees, and the students she has volunteered to host in her clinical office,\u201d says Dr. Fritz. \u201cShe has led the effort to educate physician groups in other specialties, inside and outside of our institution, on modern fertility preservation strategies for patients with cancer or other illnesses requiring treatments posing a serious threat to future reproductive opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Considering her full-time clinical practice commitments, Dr. Mersereau\u2019s research productivity is noteworthy.\u00a0Since joining the faculty, she has published 37 referred articles in a variety of high impact journals in reproductive medicine, an additional 19 reviews, commentaries, and opinions, and 34 refereed scientific abstracts.\u00a0 She served as Site Director for the NIH R90 Oncofertiilty Consortium Training Grant from 2010 to 2014 and as a co-investigator for grants from the NCI (R25), and the <a href=\"http:\/\/unclineberger.org\">UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.<\/a>\u00a0Chief among her many other academic and professional accolades is her service as associate editor of <em>Human Reproduction<\/em> and as chair of the very influential Practice Committee for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sart.org\/\">Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mersereau will lead a division that is recognized as one of the best REI divisions in the country, with a strong and stable faculty complement, an outstanding fellowship training program, productive ongoing clinical and translational research programs, and a thriving clinical practice.\u00a0 We know that she will work tirelessly to build on these strengths and will lead the division to even greater success and prominence in the years ahead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Jennifer Mersereau will become the next chief of UNC OB-GYN\u2019s Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) on May 1, 2019.\u00a0The division\u2019s longtime chief Dr. Marc Fritz has decided to step down after 26 years and will continue as a fulltime clinician and as practice director for UNC Fertility.
