The goal of PREP is to prepare students in the sciences for entry and success in top Biomedical PhD programs. Students spend a year at UNC Chapel Hill gaining valuable research experience, taking relevant graduate-level coursework, and participating in professional development activities tailored to their specific needs.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\"><strong>UNC PREP Timeline<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The PREP year begins in early June and runs through the following May (12 months).<\/p>\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-12 col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel panel-success  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\nSUMMER (June &#8211; Aug)<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li>Arrive at UNC Chapel Hill and meet your fellow cohort<\/li>\n<li>Lab Skills Bootcamp: Hands-on crash course for working in a biomedical research lab including maintaining a lab notebook, lab math, common techniques such as PCR, Western Blot, IP, DNA analysis, BLAST, biostatistics and more.<\/li>\n<li>Critical Analysis of Scientific Literature course which builds skills in reading primary research papers and critically analyzing them.<\/li>\n<li>Professional development workshops such as: time management, money management, succeeding in the research lab, and writing a personal statement<\/li>\n<li>Learn about research opportunities at UNC and meet with faculty to identify a research mentor<\/li>\n<li>Begin full time work in a research lab<\/div><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-12 col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel panel-warning  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\nFALL (Aug-Dec)<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li>Participate in a graduate level course<\/li>\n<li>Participate in weekly PREP group meetings covering a range of topics important for your development and career<\/li>\n<li>Begin work on graduate school applications<\/li>\n<li>Gain interview skills important during graduate school visits<\/li>\n<li>Present your research at a national meeting (ABRCMS)<\/li>\n<li>Continue working on independent research projects in the laboratory<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-12 col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel panel-info  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\nSPRING (Jan-May)<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li>Go on graduate school interviews<\/li>\n<li>Grant Writing Workshops<\/li>\n<li>Professional development training such as career info and presentation skills<\/li>\n<li>Finish up research projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #003366\"><strong>Student Support<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>All PREP scholars will receive a living stipend of $30,000 during their year in the PREP program. In addition, scholars will receive full tuition, health insurance, and funds to travel to a scientific conference.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #003366\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>UNC PREP participants must be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>US citizen<\/strong>; or a<strong> noncitizen national<\/strong> of the United States; or lawfully admitted for <strong>permanent residence<\/strong> at the time of appointment<\/li>\n<li>Recent baccalaureate graduates from an accredited U.S. University (within the<strong> last 3 years<\/strong> <strong>before<\/strong> applying to PREP) in the biomedical or behavioral sciences<\/li>\n<li>Interested\/ attempted to apply to biomedical or biological PhD programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What to expect as a PREP Scholar UNC PREP is a training program for students who have recently completed their Bachelor&#8217;s degree (Post-Baccalaureates or &#8220;Postbacs&#8221;) and wish to pursue a career in the Biomedical Sciences.
