Applications are accepted and filled on a rolling basis, beginning November 1st, 2020,  until all slots are full. Priority Deadline: February 19th, 2021.

When completing the online application, please have the following materials available:

  • An essay describing your career goals and reasons for wanting to participate in a summer research program
  • Names, email addresses, and phone numbers of faculty that will be submitting letters of recommendation – they will receive a link to complete their recommendation
  • Your current cumulative GPA
  • An unofficial transcript. This should be a pdf or similar file format listing all the college courses you have taken and the grades received.
  • A resume or C.V. that outlines your educational and research experiences, including presentations, publications (if applicable).

You will be required to enter information and upload your transcript, essay, and CV into the online application. You will not be allowed to submit an incomplete application so it is essential that you have these materials ready before submitting an application.

Your letter writers will receive an email once you submit your application with a link to upload their letter of recommendation. Please note that they will not receive this link until you submit your completed application.

When you click on the application link, you will need to Create an Account.  You are going to apply to the 2021 > 2021 Pre-Graduate Training Programs.  Chose that you want to apply to the UNC SURE program. If you have your own funding for summer research, please indicate this on the application and this will signal that you are interested in the SOLAR arm of the program.

Please read the information here about the application before you begin:

For full consideration, applications must be received by February 19th, 2021.  Applications are reviewed beginning in January and spots are filled on a rolling basis.  The number of slots in the SOLAR program is dependent upon fundraising efforts and varies from year to year.  You can anticipate hearing a final decision by end of March thru mid-April.

The 2021 Program will be held between June 1st and July 30th, 2021. It is essential that all participants arrive at the beginning of the program; if you will be unable to meet this requirement, we ask that you not submit an application.  Extenuating circumstances will be considered on a case by case basis.

Only online applications are accepted. When completing the online application, please have the following materials available:

  1. A Personal Statement – NO MORE THAN TWO PAGES, SINGLE SPACED (most personal statements are 1 – 1.5 pages, single-spaced)
    1. Please follow ALL instructions given in the application regarding topics that should be in your personal statement.
    2.  NAMING YOUR FILE: Please name your file using the following format:  YourLastName_YourFirstname_Statement.PDF.  For example, if your name is Jane Doe your file name would be Doe_Jane_Statement.pdf.  Files MUST follow this naming convention.
      We strongly prefer a PDF, but will also accept .doc or .docx files.
    3. Please also include a header in your document with the same naming convention.
  2. Name, title, institution, email address, and phone number of at least ONE faculty that will be submitting a letter of recommendation (preferably faculty that can speak to your potential in the lab).
  3. Your current cumulative GPA, and an electronic copy of your transcript (unofficial is fine) to upload. NAMING YOUR FILE: Please name your file using the following format:  YourLastName_YourFirstname_Transcript.PDF.  For example if your name is Jane Doe your file name would be Doe_Jane_Transcript.pdf.  Files MUST follow this naming convention.
    We strongly prefer a PDF, but will also accept .doc or .docx files.
  4. (OPTIONAL) The names of any UNC faculty whose labs you are interested in working in if you are accepted into SOLAR. (see https://bbsp.unc.edu/research-and-faculty/faculty-database/)

The application is divided into sections: Background Information, Educational & Research Information, References, Personal Statement, and Final Section. You can navigate backward and forwards between sections and edit answers while you are in the survey.

Your letter writers will receive an email once you submit your application with a link to upload their letter of recommendation. Please note that they will not receive this link until you submit your completed application.

No late applications will be accepted. Review of applications will begin in January, so get your applications in early!
