Please read the information here about the application before you begin. All applications must be received by February 20th, 2019.  Applications are reviewed beginning in January and spots are filled on a rolling basis.  The number of slots in the SOLAR program is dependent upon fundraising efforts and varies from year to year.  You can anticipate hearing a final decision by March 31, 2019.

The 2019 Program will begin May 19th and end July 26, 2019. It is essential that all participants arrive on May 19th; if you will be unable to meet this requirement, we ask that you not submit an application.  Extenuating circumstances will be considered on a case by case basis.

Only online applications are accepted. When completing the online application, please have the following materials available:

  1. A Personal Statement – NO MORE THAN TWO PAGES, SINGLE SPACED (most personal statements are 1 – 1.5 pages, single spaced)
    1. Please describe any previous research experiences.  These should be clear, logical, and concise descriptions of your research project.
    2. Please explain your research topics of interest
    3. Please explain your career goals
    4. Please explain why you are interested in participating in this program.
    5.  NAMING YOUR FILE: Please name your file using the following format:  YourLastName_YourFirstname_Statement.PDF.  For example if your name is Jane Doe your file name would be Doe_Jane_Statement.pdf.  Files MUST follow this naming convention.
      We strongly prefer a PDF, but will also accept .doc or .docx files.
  2. Name, title, institution, email address, and phone number of TWO faculty that will be submitting letters of recommendation (preferably faculty that can speak to your potential in the lab).
  3. Your current cumulative GPA, and an electronic copy of your transcript (unofficial is fine) to upload.NAMING YOUR FILE: Please name your file using the following format:  YourLastName_YourFirstname_Transcript.PDF.  For example if your name is Jane Doe your file name would be Doe_Jane_Transcript.pdf.  Files MUST follow this naming convention.

  4. (OPTIONAL) The names of any UNC faculty whose labs you are interested in working in if you are accepted into SOLAR. (see https://bbsp.unc.edu/research-and-faculty/faculty-database/)

The application is divided into sections: Background Information, Educational & Research Information, References, Personal Statement, and Final Section. You can navigate backwards and forwards between sections and edit answers while you are in the survey.

Your two letter writers will receive an email once you submit your application with a link to upload their letter of recommendation. Please note that they will not receive this link until you submit your completed application.

No late applications will be accepted. Review of applications will begin in January, so get your applications in early!
