Our commitment to YOU

Since its inception in 2009, SOLAR has honored diversity, and our team works tirelessly to uphold the commitment to diversity set forth by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We are committed to ensuring that each cohort of students represents diverse science and cultural interests. We actively recruit from colleges and universities that historically educate our underrepresented populations. We also recruit from smaller liberal arts universities that may not have the research expenditures and resources that UNC has.  While with us in the summer, students have access to current post-baccalaureate and graduate scholars in the Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) and the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) programs along with alumni from these programs via our workshops, mentoring, and other activities.

Students also have the opportunity to interact with our current student affiliate groups like the Society for Black Biomedical Scientists (SBBS), the UNC chapter of SACNAS, Women in Science (WINS), and STEM Pride. SOLAR is housed in the Office of Graduate Education (OGE) within the School of Medicine which employs many Ph.D. level scientists along with several staff members who work together to help enhance our summer students’ experiences. SOLAR also partners regularly with the Office of Diversity and Student Success (DSS) in their Summer Undergraduate Pipeline initiative to ensure that our students are supported with the resources they need.

We hope that you consider joining us for summer 2022 or as we say here…
We hope to SUNS (See yoU Next Summer)!
