2022 Translational Medicine Symposium
Tuesday April 19th, 9am to 5pm
Koury Oral Health Sciences Building, UNC campus.
The symposium is co-hosted by the Program in Translational Medicine and the Cancer Cell Biology Training Program and will feature two keynote addresses, talks by trainees in both programs, and a career panel of program alumni.
Our keynote speakers will be
- Dr. Karen Corbin, Faculty Investigator at the Translational Research Institute for Metabolism and Diabetes
- Dr. Navdeep Chandel, Professor of Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

Symposium Agenda
9:00-10:00am | Opening Keynote Address by Dr. Karen Corbin. “Accelerating Translation: Lessons Learned through the Lens of the Gut Microbiome” Kirkland Auditorium, Koury Oral Health Sciences Building (click here for map)
10:15-11:45am | Student presentations in 4 concurrent rooms (see schedule and room assignments below)
12:00-12:50pm | Lunch with keynote speakers. Box lunches will be available to symposium registrants with a name tag on the ground level atrium between the Koury and Brauer Buildings. Per School of Dentistry COVID protocols lunches can not be eaten in classrooms or auditoriums
1:00-2:00pm | Alumni career panel. Brauer 464 (click here for a map)

About the Keynote Speakers:
Karen Corbin, PhD, RD
Dr. Corbin is a Faculty Investigator at the Translational Research Institute for Metabolism and Diabetes. Her program of research focuses on nutrition, enterohepatic metabolism and the mechanisms that drive individual susceptibility to metabolic diseases. Dr. Corbin is also CEO of the science communication company Geeks that Speak. After 20 years of traversing the worlds of healthcare and science, she realized that a fundamental barrier exists for translating ideas into solutions. Geeks that Speak exists to inspire and empower scientists to become impactful storytellers.
Navdeep Chadel, PhD
Navdeep S. Chandel, PhD is the David W. Cugell, MD, Professor of Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Chandel’s work has demonstrated that mitochondrial metabolism is a potential target for cancer therapy.
