Project Description:

The Meeker lab’s primary aim is to develop potential therapeutics for HIV-associated CNS disease based on an understanding of the underlying cellular mechanisms that lead to neural damage. These mechanisms involve an interaction of virus and macrophages that leads to inflammation and neuronal damage. My project will be to elucidate the role of neurotrophin signaling in macrophages and neurons during pathogenesis. By exploring these interactions, I hope to better understand how these signaling pathways can be manipulated to provide neuroprotection with an emphasis on the use of newly developed neurotrophin ligands.
