Special instructions:

Our elective consists of a month commitment to Muhimbili National Hospital, the largest hospital in Tanzania which serves as the country’s only referral hospital and provides subspecialty care not found in other parts of the country. On this elective, you will participate in the care of the acutely injured or ill in the ED at MNH. You will be working alongside MNH EM resident physicians and EM specialty trained attendings. You will be required to complete approximately 14-16 shifts in the Emergency Medicine Department at MNH. Didactics participation at the MNH resident’s weekly lectures is highly recommended and required. Once you return from the elective rotation you will complete an After Action Report and provide a 30-minute academic based lecture on cases encountered during the elective. We offer these rotations throughout the academic year pending availability at MNH. We conform to the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine fourth year elective schedule. We confirm the rotation scheduling here at CMC, but you must register as a visiting student through UNC-Chapel Hill International Department to receive credit and to be eligible to function as a student at our institution. As such, it is imperative that you promptly complete all necessary paperwork as directed by my assistant, Kendryl Bryant. We have a limited number of slots for each rotation. As such, I personally ask that you not accept a slot unless you are sure that you can commit to completing the rotation. If you are making a preliminary inquiry, please do not request or accept a slot – we will be happy to place you on the wait-list. I am aware that some students schedule multiple rotations for the same time period and then wait until later to decide which commitment to honor. Please do not do this as it is unfair to us and to your peers who are turned away as a result of this practice. If you have any concern regarding your ability to commit to completing our rotation, please be in contact with me directly prior to scheduling the rotation. Please forward the following information (electronic or hardcopy) to Dr. Noste (Erin.Noste@carolinashealthcare.org) and Ms. Bryant (kendryl.bryant@carolinashealthcare.org at your earliest convenience: 1) Current CV 2) Medical school transcript 3) A brief note detailing your interest in our EM rotation in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and your previous experience with international medicine. 4) Desired rotation dates (with 2nd and 3rd choices, if applicable)
