OGHE has an official exchange program with the University of Cayetano Heredia in Peru, which allows a limited number of students to apply to take a clinical elective through this exchange.
- Four-week clinical elective with University of Cayetano Medical School. Applicants submit a list of clinical placement preferences as a part of the application process.
About University of Cayetano
Cayetano Heredia University located in Lima, Peru is considered one of the top medical schools in Peru, and is one of the major producers and publishers of scientific research in the country. Founded in 1961 by a group of professors and students from the medical school of the four-century-old National University of San Marcos in Lima, Cayetano Heredia University has established numerous agreements and collaborative arrangements with leading institutions from all over the world. Prerequisites
Students should have a communicative level of Spanish to completely enjoy their clinical rotations. For those students with a lower level of Spanish who wish to improve their Spanish, we can recommend other OGHE programs with Spanish language classes.
Capacity/Dates
There are a limited number of spaces available through the UNC-Cayetano exchange each year. Candidates should indicate interest to OGHE at least six months prior to the dates of the clinical elective time.
Costs
Applicants can apply for an OGHE travel award to off-set costs of the program.

- $50 for health insurance (Four weeks)*OGHE always covers this for students on GH electives whether you receive other funding or not.

- Flight – approx. $600-1,200 (cost is very dependent on when you book and when you are going)

Elective Credit
Students are approved by OGHE to enroll in GLBE 405-3 (Comparative Health) or GLBE 477 (Global Primary Care) depending on the clinical placement.
Timelines
Fourth year students can participate in any individualization phase block available (per approval from advisors and SOM). Student should apply at least six months prior to the clinical elective dates and for the appropriate OGHE Travel Award deadline (prior to their placement dates)
