Fan Lee completed an undergraduate degree in Bioengineering from University of Washington in Seattle, then had her first global health experience in Kenya as a volunteer in HIV/AIDs education. That experience lead Fan to medicine and she returned to University of Washington for medical school. During medical school, Fan completed the global health pathway which included a community health project focused on STD and HIV prevention in rural Uganda. There, Fan discovered her passion for women’s health and took year-long NIH-Fogarty fellowship in Kenya on cervical cancer screening and dysplasia treatment prior to pursing residency in OBGYN.
As an OBGYN resident at UNC, Fan has had the opportunity to continue clinical and research training through UNC-Project Malawi in the area of cervical cancer screening and prevention. With the support of Global Health Scholar Program, Fan has been able to spend time in Lilongwe over the course of a busy residency and present her research at Federation of International Gynecology and Obstetrics conference. Now, with new understanding and perspective as a physician and surgeon specialized in the care of women, Fan is planning to return to Malawi under UNC’s Global Women’s Health Fellowship in 2020 for further her research training and continue her work with women in low-resource communities.
