An electricity shortage in Gaza threatens to darken hospitals by the end of next month, the WHO warns, unless funding for emergency generators comes through.

Struggling to uphold basic practices like sterilizing equipment amid the crisis, the health system is on “the edge of collapse,” says Mahmoud Daher, head of the WHO’s Gaza sub-office.

Hospital infections are rising as a result, especially in overcrowded neonatal units—where several babies often occupy incubators designed for one, according to Andy Ferguson of Medical Aid for Palestinians (Map).

Later this month, the UN is expected to call for $374m to meet humanitarian needs in the Gaza Strip.
