OIA Global Health Forum: Expanding access to endoscopy and gastrointestinal cancer prevention in Central America

Michael Dougherty, MD, MSCR
Fellow, Gastroenterology & Hepatology

Michael is a fellow in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and a UNC School of Medicine graduate. With the Global Health Scholars Program, his focus is on gastric cancer in Central America (Nicaragua and Honduras) with mentors Dr. Douglas Morgan (UAB) and Dr. Andrea Azcarate-Peril.

As part of his fellowship he has completed a Master of Science in Clinical Research, with a Certificate in Global Health, at the Gillings School of Global Public Health. Michael’s interest in global health has led him to volunteer with Puentes de Salud, complete a rotation in Botswana, and work at the Hospitalito Atitlan in Guatemala with the Penn Global Health and Comprehensive Care Fellowship. He also recently helped to launch Hospitalito Atitlan’s first endoscopy program.
