School of Medicine-based Scholarships for Global Health Proposals

The annual Office of International Activities Medical Student Global Health Scholarship application is a single application pertaining to UNC School of Medicine’s Office of International Activities award funds, Perkins-Burke International Health Fellowship, Becton-Tannenbaum Fellowship, Medical Alumni Loyalty Fund Global Enrichment Fellowship, and the International Health Fellowship. Scholarship Details

MS4 Fellowships – Early Application: Deadline September 15

In an effort to better meet the travel and schedule needs of MS4 students, we are offering this early application period for the Privette Fellowship and International Fellowships. MS4s may also apply in the Spring (February 15th) for the Medical Student Fellowships that are open to all medical students.

Becton-Tannenbaum Fellowship

The Becton-Tannenbaum International Medicine Fund is established through the generosity of Nancy Tannenbaum and John Becton. The Fund is an endowment held at The Medical Foundation of North Carolina, Inc. Each year a portion of the earnings will be set aside to provide assistance to one UNC School of Medicine student desiring to travel to developing countries to experience a contrasting medical community or system. This is coordinated through the SOM Office of International Activities and the Fellowship Selection Committee reviews the applications and selects the awardee.

Global Community Service Fellowship Fund

In honor of her medical education, seminal travel and medical service experiences while a student at the UNC School of Medicine, an anonymous alumna created this fellowship fund in 2014 to enrich and support medical students interested in global service project(s). Applicants either design, plan or budget their own activity (or plan and budget participation in an established activity) that allows them to examine an aspect of global community health with the goal of positively impacting the population of the area. This will be coordinated through the Office of International Activities and a Fellowship Selection Committee reviews the applications and selects the awardee(s).

Jeffrey L. Houpt MD Loyalty Fund Global Enrichment Fellowship

Dr. Houpt is currently Dean Emeritus of the School of Medicine, former Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs, and CEO of the UNC Health Care System at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. He assumed the position of Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs at UNC in 1997 and stepped down in 2004. He successfully worked to integrate the hospital and practice plan, and was named CEO of the UNC Health Care System in 1998. His research, teaching and clinical interests examine the interface between psychiatry and medicine, particularly the role of human behavior and psychiatric disorders in the expression of medical disorders. In honor of Dr. Houpt, Blue Cross Blue Shieldof North Carolina has established this fellowship to provide a travel award for one first year student to undertake a global health elective. Each year, one outstanding first year UNC medical student will be selected as Jeffrey L. Houpt Loyalty Fund Global Enrichment Fellow. Fellows will be funded to pursue a global health elective in the summer before starting second year. Applicants design and plan an activity that allows them to experience or investigate an aspect of global health that positively and directly influences the health of people in the region they are studying. Language ability in the intended country of experience and/or financial may be factors for selection. This will be coordinated through the Office of International Activities and the Fellowship Selection Committee reviews the applications and selects the awardee. The Jeffrey L. Houpt Loyalty Fund Global Enrichment Fellowship awardee will receive an award towards the cost of travel and expenses.

Medical Alumni Loyalty Fund Global Enrichment Fellowship

With more and more students interested in global health, the Loyalty Fund through generous donations from UNC medical alumni is providing five annual financial fellowships for first year students to undertake a global health elective. Each year, outstanding first year UNC medical students will be selected as Medical Alumni Loyalty Fund Global Enrichment Fellows. Fellows will be funded to pursue a global health elective in the summer before starting second year. Applicants design and plan an activity that allows them to experience or investigate an aspect of global health that positively and directly influences the health of people in the region they are studying. Preference will be given to students who have had limited opportunities for international travel previously. Language ability in the intended country of experience will also be an important factor in selection. This will be coordinated through the Office of International Activities and a Fellowship Selection Committee reviews the applications and selects the awardees

Medical Foundation Privette Fellowship

The Privette Memorial Fund is the annual award established through the generosity of Dr. Douglas C. Privette ’76 in honor of his parents, Henry and Pauline Privette. With more students interested in global health, the Privette Memorial Fund is providing for an annual financial fellowship for a MS4 student to undertake a global health elective. This will be coordinated through the Office of International Activities, and the awarded student will work closely with a UNC SOM faculty mentor in selecting a placement site and defining educational objectives. Students who undertake international elective opportunities during medical school often incorporate their learning into their career inimportant ways, including increased emphasis on care of the underserved wherever they practice, increased sensitivity to cross-cultural issues in medicine, and leadership in public health and health care systems. This global enrichment fellowship will offer one MS4 student this opportunity each year (as funding allows). MS4 students can apply for this funding by completing the MS4 Fellowship-Early Application due September 15.

Perkins-Burke International Fellowship

The Perkins-Burke International Fellowship is funded through the same private donation for a first year UNC medical student pursuing a global health experience in the summer before starting second year. Each year, outstanding students will be selected as Perkins-Burke International Fellows. Applicants design and plan an activity that allows them to experience or investigate an aspect of global health that positively and directly influences the health of people in the region they are studying. Preference may be given to those studying infectious diseases such as global tuberculosis or malaria and to students who have who have had limited opportunities for international travel previously. Language ability in the intended country of experience is also an important factor in selection. This will be coordinated through the Office of International Activities and a selection committee composed of School of Medicine faculty reviews the applications and selects the awardee. The Perkins-Burke International Fellowship recipient will receive an award towards the cost of travel and expenses.

UNC School of Medicine International Fellowships

Fellowships each year provide partial support to UNC medical students who want to undertake an elective clinical or research experience in another country. This fellowship is funded by the Office of International Activities and the award amounts range from $500 to $2,000. On average, medical student applicants are awarded $1000.
