Away Elective Process

Students interested in doing an away rotation must email SOMelectives@med.unc.edu in order to receive a VSLO (Visiting Student Learning Opportunities) system authorization. Students who do not have an authorization will be unable to submit a VSLO application. If students are applying to a program that does not use VSLO, you do not need to request an authorization.

VSLO will require a transcript to be uploaded before students can submit their application(s). In most cases, host institutions (the school you are applying to) will accept an unofficial transcript, unless otherwise stated in the requirements. To request an unofficial transcript, please complete the UNC School of Medicine Consent Form and return to somrecords@med.unc.edu. If you need to request an official transcript (this will cost $9.20), please follow this link for instructions on how to order a transcript from ConnectCarolina: https://registrar.unc.edu/academic-services/transcripts-certifications/.

In addition to your transcript, the host institution may request additional documents that must be uploaded by the School of Medicine Office of Student Affairs. Additional documents can include, but may not be limited to, malpractice/liability documentation, letters of reference from faculty members and/or letters of good standing. All documents must be sent to SOMelectives@med.unc.edu

Note: The Office of Student Affairs is required to complete a verification questionnaire for all VSLO applicants. This includes, but not limited to, verifying background checks, HIPPA/OSHA compliance and malpractice coverage. Students do not see this information but it must be manually completed by Student Affairs prior to the application being released to the host institution. This process is manually completed by Student Affairs for each institution that students apply to.

Whether students apply through VSLO or not, all students must complete the following:

  1. Submit confirmation that the host institution has offered the away rotation and you have accepted it. This can be an official letter of acceptance, e-mail confirmation or VSLO notification of acceptance.
  2. Complete the Away Elective Request Form in order to receive UNC credit.
    • This form must be completed prior to the start of the rotation.
    • Rotation credits can only count towards elective credit, they do not count for selective graduation requirements.
    • No retroactive credit will be given.
  3. Send confirmation and completed request form to SOMelectives@med.unc.edu.
    1. Once this form is approved by the SOM Registrar’s Office, students will be officially registered to one45 and ConnectCarolina.
