FAQs / Additional Info

How do students get assigned a career goal advisor?
Typically, after an email expresses interest.

What should my Individualization Phase schedule look like?
We should be able to discuss this in a meeting.

Do all my rotations need to be in Plastics Surgery?
Ideally, they are specialty heavy.  At least surgical.

Should I do an away rotation?  What in?
Yes, in Plastic Surgery.

Do I need a rotation at UNC if I spent my time in Charlotte/Asheville/Wilmington?
It increases visibility allows a more personalized LOR.

When do I need to meet with my career goal advisor?  How do I prepare?
Email first to arrange a time.  Bring any questions you may have about schedule, LOR etc.

How many letters of recommendation do I need?  From whom should I get them?
3. From PD, chief, and someone you have worked with closely who knows you well.

When do I ask for my letters?  What do they need?
While on rotation towards the end of the time.

How do I determine the best programs I should apply to?
Different programs speak to different individuals.  Is your goal academic surgery or community/private practice?  We can discuss options based on your goals.  I do recommend at applying to both styles of programs to make sure you explore all options.

I just got this great piece of news…do I need to notify programs
Only if crucial

My LORs aren’t in and ERAS just opened!
Please call Dr. Alice Chuang (you should identify this as an issue before ERAS is open)

I am waitlisted for an interview at X and I’d really like to see that program.  What do I do?
Sometimes reaching out via email about what appeals to you about the program is helpful.

I didn’t get an interview at X program.  Should I send them a “letter of intent”?
No.

Should I send thank you letters to programs?
An email used to be acceptable, but programs are unable to communicate with applicants directly after interviews so some will say not to send them at all.

Should I send a letter to the program I am planning to rank #1?
Identifying interest is fine.

How do I respond if a program reaches out to me after my interview?
Please inform Dr. Alice Chuang.  No programs should be reaching out to you directly.
