Housing: You are responsible for finding your own housing if you are confirmed for an elective at the UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill or the Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC. We have enclosed a list with names of people in the community who are interested in having students stay with them for a charge. The amount being charged is set by the person renting the property.
Parking: If you plan to drive your personal vehicle while participating in an elective at UNC Hospitals, you will need to purchase a parking permit. We have been allotted a limited number of parking spaces for medical students. These permits are disbursed to UNC medical students on the first day of each elective rotation. We cannot guarantee that a parking space will be available for visiting students after UNC students are assigned. If you would like to apply for a parking permit, please come by the Student Affairs Office, room 1001 Bondurant Hall to complete a parking application and obtain further instructions. On the Visiting Student Application, you were asked for your Social Security Number in order to be assigned a PID (Personal Identification Number). This PID number will be used by the Parking and Transportation Office to process your parking application. This number will be available in our office when you come by to apply for parking. You are also required to show proof of vehicle insurance.
Please know that during home football games and home basketball games, some of the lots will be used for parking for those events. A sign will be set up in the lot ahead of time. Any cars in those lots (even those with a permit) after the designated time, can be ticketed or towed. Please make sure that you follow the instructions.
Seven days a week during the Spring and Fall academic semesters, Point-to-Point Express (P2P) offers free, fixed-campus-route transportation to all students (except university holidays or when residence halls are closed). Service hours are from 7:00 PM until 3:00 AM each evening. Please consult www.dps.unc.edu for a detailed route map and up-to-date schedule. After dark, P2P offers shuttle services for those passengers not on the P2P Express bus route. You can request a ride from the shuttle by calling (919) 962-7867. Please see the attached letter for more about P2P Express and the P2P Shuttle.
Computer Access Codes: We will have your WebCIS access codes in our office. Stop by 1001 Bondurant Hall to get them.
ID Badges: Please bring your own ID badge. If the department you are rotating through requires you to have a UNC Hospital badge, they will issue one.
Pagers: Pagers, if available, will be provided by the department you are rotating with. The number of pagers available is limited so please bring your own if you have one.
White Coats: All medical students are required to wear a short, white coat. Please bring one with you.
Gym/Pool Privileges: If you would like to use the gym or pool while here at UNC, please bring a copy of your approval letter to present to Campus Recreation (919-843-7529) once you have arrived in Chapel Hill. Please note there is a $25.00 per week charge to use the facilities. You will need to give the Campus Recreation representative your contact information so they can contact you when your pass is ready. There could be a 5 day turn around to get your pass.
If you choose to stay at an AHEC site you are responsible for paying for your stay. Their fee is $20 per night. This form of housing is set up by the department.
