SUMMARY:Boost Funding Applications Due
DESCRIPTION:NC School of Medicine (SOM) faculty are extremely successful in their efforts to obtain funding for their research\, although the SOM recognizes that it often takes multiple submissions and additional experimental data to get a new project funded\, particularly as a new investigator\, or with a more complex\, multi-PI project. \nIn support of these efforts\, the SOM Office of Research is inviting applications from faculty for Boost awards\, which are designed to boost the chances of funding for an NIH grant (or similar) that has been reviewed favorably but needs additional revisions and preliminary data in order to be funded on resubmission.  Please note that Boost awards are distinct from the OoR bridge funding program\, which provides funds for bridging A1 renewal applications for ongoing\, not new\, projects. \nThe most recent memo can be found here. \nPlease direct questions and email your applications to Jen Brennan at OoR_Submissions@med.unc.edu.

DESCRIPTION:Limited Submissions: Internal Call for Nominations  \nBlavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists  \nin Life Sciences\, Physical Sciences & Engineering\, and Chemistry  \nUNC Internal Deadline: 11:59PM\, Monday\, October 3\, 2022  \n  \nThe Blavatnik Family Foundation invites UNC-CH to provide nominations for the Blavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists in Life Sciences\, Physical Sciences and Engineering\, and Chemistry. UNC may nominate up to three candidates—one each in Life Sciences\, Physical Sciences and Engineering\, and Chemistry. Below you will find the internal nomination procedure\, award information\, and eligibility requirements. \n  \nKey Dates \nUNC Internal Deadline: 11:59PM\, Monday\, October 3\, 2022 \nBlavatnik Nomination Deadline: November 9\, 2022  \nImportant Information  \n  \nThe Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists strive for nominee equality and diversity\, and strongly encourage the nomination of women and members of other historically underrepresented groups in science and engineering. In support of all scientists’ efforts to increase the diversity of their fields\, and in recognition of the many professional service and outreach activities that scientists undertake\, Blavatnik is requiring all nominees to submit a Professional Service and Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Statement as part of their nomination materials. Details on this requirement can be found on the Nomination Materials and Instructions page. \n  \nThe Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists is focused on accomplishments during the independent career only. CVs must omit publications from the graduate and postdoctoral career\, and recommendation letters must discuss the independent career only. Most finalists and laureates have held the rank of associate or full professor. \nThis is a laureate award to honor the accomplishments of young faculty. It does not provide funding for a project. Awards (three in total each year) are given to individuals\, not institutions.  \n  \nFor more information on award finalists\, laureates and evaluators\, please see the lists of honorees and membership of the award’s Scientific Advisory Council. \nTo Apply  \nSubmit the following via LAMSeS by 11:59PM\, Monday\, October 3\, 2022. \n\nNomination statement: indicating the nominee’s disciplinary category and subcategories (up to two) selected from the online list and a rationale for nomination pertaining to the nominee’s independent faculty career. This should detail the nominee’s strong record of significant independent scientific contributions\, early career success\, and promise of sustained or accelerated progress in the future. (200-word maximum). \n\n\nNominee’s curriculum vitae. Please use the CV Format Example as a guide to the required elements. This program focuses on the independent faculty career. Please omit publications from graduate and postdoctoral career. Full text publications and patents need not be included in the internal nomination package; faculty can bold and provide hyperlinks to the publications and patents they wish to highlight in the CV.\nNominee’s research summary: Describe up to five of the nominee’s most significant scientific contributions and research accomplishments from their independent career. Include key results\, impact on the nominee’s field of study\, and the nominee’s specific role in the described work (especially where the nominee is involved in large collaborations). SUMMARY:Internal Limited Submission Deadline: NCI Predoctoral Transition Award (F99/K00)
DESCRIPTION:The NCI plans to reissue the F99/K00 transitional training award for graduate students in the field of cancer research (see the attached flyer from FY20 as well as the Notice of Intent to republish the RFA linked here.). Last year’s RFA can also be found here.  Please consider nominating your students if they fit the eligibility criteria.  Only one proposal per institution is allowed so there will be an internal selection process to identify the best candidate. \nThe purpose of the award is to facilitate the transition of talented graduate students into successful cancer research postdoctoral appointments\, and provide opportunities for career development activities relevant to their long-term career goals of becoming independent cancer researchers. \nThe F99/K00 award is meant to provide up to 6 years of support in two phases and is intended for individuals who require 1-2 years to complete their Ph.D. dissertation research training (F99 phase) before transitioning to mentored postdoctoral research training (K00 phase). Consequently\, applicants are expected to propose an individualized research training plan for the next 1-2 years of dissertation research training and a plan for 3-4 years of mentored postdoctoral research and career development activities that will prepare them for independent cancer-focused research careers. \nThe applicant must have a baccalaureate degree and be currently enrolled as a graduate student in the third or fourth year of a mentored PhD or equivalent research degree program in the biomedical\, behavioral\, or clinical sciences. The applicant must be at the dissertation research stage of training at the time of award\, and must show evidence of high academic performance in the sciences and commitment to a career as an independent cancer research scientist \nSince this is a limited submission\, the OoR will conduct the SOM review and coordinate the final review and selection with other schools that have nominated applicants. \nFaculty mentors with primary appointments in the School of Dentistry\, School of Pharmacy\, or School of Public Health should direct their nominations to their School. \nFor faculty mentors in the SOM\, the items below should be emailed to the Office of Research (oor_submissions@med.unc.edu) by Thursday\, September 1\, 2022. \n\nTitle Page including:\n\n-Nominee name\, department\, PhD program\, current year in the graduate program \n-Mentor name\, department \n-Citizenship status or current Visa \n\nNomination letter from the primary mentor. This letter should confirm that the nominee will be at the dissertation research stage of training at the time of award\, and must provide “evidence of high academic performance in the sciences and commitment to a career as an independent cancer research scientist” .  The primary mentor must confirm his/her “successful track record of mentoring predoctoral students”.\n\n\nDissertation Aims / Summary (1 page) prepared by the nominee\nNIH biosketch for the candidate (please address future plans and relevance to cancer in your personal statement)\nNIH biosketch for the faculty mentor\n\n  \nUNC has had three students that have been selected for this program previously:  Sarah Shelton / BME (2016) and Ning Cheng / Oral biology (2017) and Megan Agajanian / Pharmacology (2019). \n  \nMore information including slides and recording of webinars from last year can be found here under the Resources tab at the end of the page.
