SUMMARY:Deadline for Limited Submission Internal Applications: The Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering
DESCRIPTION:  \nLimited Submissions: Internal Call for Proposals \nThe Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering\nUNC Internal deadline: 11:59PM\, Sunday\, March 1\, 2020 \n  \n*Please distribute to relevant faculty* \nKey Dates \nUNC Internal Deadline: 11:59PM\, Sunday\, March 1\, 2020 \nNomination Deadline: March 16\, 2020 \nApplication Deadline: April 20\, 2020 \nImportant Information \n\nNumber of Applications per Institution: Two early-career professors may be nominated by each institution.\nWhat is Not Funded: Recognizing that certain areas of contemporary science and engineering already have access to relatively generous funding (for example\, clinical research\, research associated with the design and construction of large national facilities such as accelerators and space stations\, and applied research of direct relevance to national security)\, the Packard Fellowships are directed to other\, less generously supported fields.\n\nTo Apply \nSubmit the following (in ONE .pdf) to the Office of Research Development limited submissions inbox Limited_Submissions@unc.edu by 11:59PM\, Sunday\, March 1\, 2020. \n\nCandidate’s full CV\, including research support and publications\nLetter of nomination from your department chair or other senior administrator\nCandidate Research Statement\, describing why the research is important and outlining general goals for the next five years (one-page maximum\, excluding figures and references)\nList of three potential individuals to provide external letters of recommendation\, including their titles\, institutional affiliations\, and a two-three sentence overview of their area of expertise. At least one individual must be a person who has had no supervisory or collaborative contact with the candidate.\nNames of three internal (to UNC) experts who could speak knowledgeably about the candidate’s research and who could potentially serve on an internal review panel to evaluate nominees for this program.\n\nPlease do not include department chairs\, deans\, directors\, direct reports\, or others who have a conflict of interest. \nPlease notify all potential internal reviewers before submitting the pre-proposal packet to ORD.\n\n\n\nProgram Overview \nIn 1988\, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation established the Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering to allow the nation’s most promising early career professors to pursue their science and engineering research with few funding restrictions and limited paperwork requirements. It is among the nation’s largest nongovernmental fellowships\, designed to allow maximum flexibility on how the funding is used. Packard Fellows have gone on to receive many additional awards and honors\, including the Nobel Prize in Chemistry; the Nobel Prize in Physics; the Fields Medal; the MacArthur Fellowships; and elections to the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. \n  \nEvery year\, the Foundation invites the presidents of 50 universities to nominate two early-career professors each from their institutions. Nominations are carefully reviewed by the Fellowship Advisory Panel\, comprised of distinguished scientists and engineers. 20 recipients will receive individual grants of $875\,000 distributed over five years. Of the $175\,000 paid each year\, $17\,500 is available to the university as compensation for administrative costs. \nEligibility \nCandidates must be faculty members who are eligible to serve as principal investigators engaged in research in the natural and physical sciences or engineering and must be within the first three years of their faculty careers\, that is\, whose initial faculty appointment began no earlier than May 31\, 2017 and no later than May 31\, 2020. Disciplines that will be considered include physics\, chemistry\, mathematics\, biology\, astronomy\, computer science\, earth science\, ocean science\, and all branches of engineering. Candidates engaged in research in the social sciences will not be considered. The Fellowship Program provides support for highly creative researchers early in their careers; faculty members who are well established and well-funded are less likely to receive the award. Packard Fellows are inquisitive\, passionate scientists and engineers who take a creative approach to their research\, dare to think big\, and follow new ideas wherever they lead. The Foundation emphasizes support for innovative individual research that involves the Fellows\, their students\, and junior colleagues\, rather than extensions or components of large-scale\, ongoing research programs. \nAward Information \nAward Amount: Each recipient will receive an individual grant of $875\,000 distributed over five years. Of the $175\,000 paid each year\, $17\,500 is available to the university as compensation for administrative costs. \nAdditional Information \nFull Solicitation: https://www.packard.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/2020-Packard-Fellows-Guidelines.pdf \n  \nFor additional information\, please contact the Limited Submissions Team with questions at Limited_Submissions@unc.edu. \n  \n  \n  \nLimited Submissions Team \nOffice of Research Development \nUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill \n308 Bynum Hall \nChapel Hill\, NC 27599 \n(919) 962-7503

SUMMARY:Deadline for Bridge Funding
DESCRIPTION:The School of Medicine is opening the second round of applications for Bridge Funding for this fiscal year. Bridge Funding provides continued support for successful research projects that suffer a lapse in funding. Investigators eligible for funding in this round should have had a competing renewal application for an R01 or equivalent grant reviewed in the most recent review cycle (Oct/Nov 2019). \nBridge funding is a critical resource for SOM faculty\, and a high proportion of bridge funding recipients have been successful in renewing their NIH support. Thus\, a competitive bridge funding application must demonstrate a high likelihood of receiving NIH funding upon resubmission. \nThe deadline for the current round of application submissions is 5 P.M. Wednesday\, January 8\, 2020. \nFor the current RFA\, eligible criteria\, and a list of the required application components\, please visit our website here.

SUMMARY:"Surviving Medicine in the 21st Century" Presentation with Dr. Danielle Ofri
DESCRIPTION:Inspiration in Medicine: Disillusionment in medicine feels like it is reaching epidemic proportions. Doctors say that they woudl never choose the field if they had to do it all over again. Medical error and burnout seem to be everywhere. But it might be too soon to close the book on the medical profession. This presentation examines the impact of disillusionment\, highlighting strategies for re-engaging doctors\, combating burnout\, and thriving in the new era of medicine. \nVisit the link below for more information and contact facultyaffairs@med.unc.edu with any questions
