A PFI-RP project requires the creation of partnerships between academic researchers and third-party organizations such as industry\, non-academic research organizations\, federal laboratories\, public or non-profit technology transfer organizations or other universities. Such partnerships are needed to conduct applied research on a stand-alone larger project toward commercialization and societal impact. In the absence of such synergistic partnership\, the project’s likelihood for success would be minimal. PFI-RP proposals require a minimum of one (1) Industrial Partner. This partner (i.e.\, either a for-profit or not- for-profit entity that fulfills the minimum requirement) must be U.S.-based and have an established record of commercial revenues that include sales\, services\, or licensing.  \nThe intended outcome of the track is:   \n\nThe commercialization of new intellectual property derived from NSF-funded research outputs;\nThe creation of new or broader collaborations with industry (including increased corporate sponsored research);\nThe licensing of NSF-funded research outputs to third party corporations or to start-up companies funded by a PFI team; and d) the training of future innovation and entrepreneurship leaders.\n\nEligibility  \nNSF Lineage Requirement: All proposals submitted to the PFI program must meet a lineage requirement under one of the following two paths: (1) NSF-supported research results\, or (2) NSF-supported customer discovery results through the NSF I-Corps Teams Program. \n  \n\n NSF-supported research results in all fields of science and engineering: Principal Investigator (PI) or a co-PI must have had an NSF award that ended no more than seven (7) years prior to the full proposal deadline date or be a current NSF award recipient. The proposed technology development project must be derived from the research results and/or discoveries from this underlying NSF award.\n\nOR \n\n NSF-supported customer discovery results through the NSF I-Corps TeamsProgram. The Principal Investigator (PI) or a co-PI must have been a member of an award under the NSF I-Corps Teams Program (https://www.nsf.gov/news/special_reports/i-corps/teams.jsp). The PI or co-PI must have fully completed the training provided under the I-Corps Team award within the past four (4) years. The customer discovery activities performed under the NSF-funded I-Corps award must be based on the technology that is proposed to be translated within the PFI proposal.\n\n  \nOBJECTIVES NOT RESPONSIVE TO THIS SOLICITATION \nProposals that pursue the following activities are not responsive to this solicitation and may be returned without review: basic research projects that do not involve technology translation and development activity; clinical trials\, clinical efficacy or safety studies\, development or validation of pre-clinical or clinical-stage drug candidates\, medical devices or information technologies\, or activities performed for regulatory purposes; commercial activities such as marketing\, sales\, corporate or business development\, fundraising\, intellectual property or regulatory work; straightforward engineering work; incremental development of existing products; or evolutionary modifications to broaden the scope of existing products or applications. \n  \nInternal Review Criteria  \nAll PFI proposals must address the following five elements. Please view the NSF solicitation for additional details. \n\nTechnology Development\nDemonstration of Commercialization Potential\nPartnerships\nEducation and Leadership Development in Innovation and Entrepreneurship\nBroadening Participation\n\nAdditional Information  \nFull solicitation: https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2019/nsf19506/nsf19506.htm \nPlease contact the Limited Submissions Team with questions at Limited_Submission@unc.edu. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLimited Submissions Team \nOffice of Research Development \nUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill \n

In recent years there has been a growing recognition of the need to create and support an innovative and inclusive engineering profession for the 21st Century. Doing so requires understanding of how engineers are formed and how to inculcate them with the technical and professional skills needed to solve the complex problems facing society. While some innovation has been adopted in the freshman and senior years\, the middle two years remain largely untouched [4]. Educating the next generation requires that coherent technical and professional threads be developed and woven across all four years. The RED program is focusing on the middle two years because of the lack of attention this period has received in the past. Further\, the RED program focuses on structural and cultural change because past attempts have shown that curricular and pedagogical change does not take hold if underlying structures remain the same. In addition\, RED funding has demonstrated the need to engage both internal and external stakeholders to build shared vision in departmental change projects [5\,6]. RED projects should create a seamless educational experience for students in their disciplinary degree programs\, bridging the foundational science and engineering courses and capstone projects. The result will be students who are prepared to be professionals in their chosen paths after graduation. Proposals from IHEs with documented success in awarding degrees to students from groups underrepresented in engineering (such as minority-serving institutions\, women’s colleges\, IHEs primarily serving persons with disabilities) are strongly encouraged. \n  \nStrategies should be developed with impact on the student as the focus. Proposed efforts must be grounded in sound educational theory and work to enable a continuous progression of professional formation through the four-year experience. Efforts should address 21st Century T-shaped skills (i.e.\, cross-disciplinary breadth)\, and they should be aligned with stakeholder expectations. \n  \n  \nSpecific activities supported by the RED solicitation may include\, but are not limited to:  \n\nEstablishing convergent technical and professional threads that must be woven across the four years\, especially in core technical courses of the middle two years\, in internship opportunities in the private and public sectors\, and in research opportunities with faculty;\nExploring strategies for institutional\, systemic\, and cultural change\, including new approaches to faculty governance or department structures and to restructuring faculty incentive or reward systems;\nExploring collaborative arrangements with industry and other stakeholders who are mutually interested in developing the best possible professional formation environment and opportunities for students;\nExploring strategies to bridge the engineering education research-to-practice gap\, primarily through faculty development and adoption of best practices in the professional formation of engineers; and\nExploring revolutionary means of recruiting and retaining students and faculty reflective of the modern and swiftly changing demographics of the United States.\nExploring new modes of delivering content (or facilitating learning) that respond to the learning needs of a diverse student body\, making engineering more accessible.\n\nRED Innovation track: The RED Innovation track supports projects that involve radically\, suddenly\, or completely new approaches and action; producing fundamental\, structural change; and that go outside of or beyond existing norms and principles. Innovations in similar departments across multiple institutions is particularly encouraged. This track has two goals: \n\nGenerate new knowledge on best practices for meaningfully and thoughtfully incorporating into the middle two years at four-year institutions and technical core of the engineering curriculum oft-neglected “professional skills” (i.e. 21st Century skills\, design\, communication\, teamwork\, historical and contemporary social context\, lifelong learning\, and ethics). Changes in the middle two years need to be integrated with freshman and senior experiences in order to form an unbroken sequenced thread through the curriculum so that the process of professional formation deepens and strengthens as students move through engineering programs.\nGenerate new knowledge on how to transform the departmental cultures to be environments that are inclusive\, innovative\, equitable and supportive of faculty\, faculty development to support cultural change\, and build new department structures and cultures through innovative practices and policies that support significant holistic professional formation.\n\nRED A&I Track: The RED A&I track support projects that use evidence-based and evidence-generating change strategy approaches and actions that are adapted to the local context. The goal of this track is to: \n\nGenerate new knowledge related to the adaptation of proven change strategies and actions in a new context.\n\nThis track encourages proposals from two-year or four-year institutions that are interested in adopting change strategies at a single institution. \nRED Two-Year Track: The RED Two-Year track supports projects that involve radically new approaches among multiple two-year institutions that result in structural changes beyond existing norms and principles. The goal of this track is to: \n\nGenerate new knowledge on best practices for preparing engineers and technologists for future professions and integrating professional skills into the curriculum at two-year institutions through supporting partnerships. The focus is expected to be on students who would transfer to accredited four-year engineering or engineering-technology institutions.\n\nEligibility \n  \nWho May Serve as PI: For all tracks\, the Principal Investigator must be a department chair/head (or equivalent) to provide leadership for the change process. For the RED Two-Year Track\, the PI must be at a two-year institution. Additionally\, there must be a RED team that includes (at a minimum) an expert in engineering education research who can provide guidance on evidence-based practices\, and an organizational change expert who can advise on strategies for developing a culture of change and on strategies for creating meaningful collective ownership of the effort among faculty\, students\, and staff. The engineering education and organizational change experts may be at different institutions from the proposing institution. Funding for these experts at other institutions may be supported as consultants\, through a subaward\, or through a separately submitted collaborative proposal. \nReview Criteria \nThe internal review criteria will mirror the guidelines as described within the program solicitation. \nAdditional Information \nFull solicitation: https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2022/nsf22587/nsf22587.htm \nPlease contact the Limited Submissions Team with questions at Limited_Submission@unc.edu. \n  \n  \n  \nLimited Submissions Team \nOffice of Research Development \nUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill \n

SUMMARY:Limited Submission Internal Deadline: National Institute of Health Collaborative Program Grant for Multidisciplinary Teams (RM1)
DESCRIPTION:Limited Submissions: Internal Call for Proposals \nNational Institute of Health \nCollaborative Program Grant for Multidisciplinary Teams (RM1)\nUNC Internal Deadline: 11:59PM\, Monday\, August 9\, 2021 \n  \n*Please distribute to relevant faculty* \nKey Dates \nUNC Internal Deadline: 11:59PM\, Monday\, August 9\, 2021 \nLOI Due Date: 30 days prior to application deadline \nNIH Application Deadline: January 27\, 2021 \nImportant Information \nNumber of Applications per Institution: Only one application per institution is allowed per review round. \n  \nConsultation with relevant IC staff at least 10 weeks prior to the application due date is strongly encouraged.  \nTo Apply \nSubmit the following via LAMSeS by 11:59PM\, Monday\, August 9\, 2021. \n\nPI/Proposed team member’s CV/NIH Biosketch (five-page maximum)\nProject Summary (four-page maximum\, as an attachment) including a list of potential/committed collaborators (internal and external to UNC)\nWritten confirmation that the PI team has spoken with an NIGMS Program Official who has agreed to accept the proposal under the RM1 mechanism (please see additional program information below for more details)\nNames of three internal (to UNC) experts who could speak knowledgeably about the candidate’s research and who could potentially serve on an internal review panel.\n\nPlease do not include the names of faculty named on the project\, chairs\, deans\, directors\, direct reports\, or others who have a conflict of interest. \nPlease notify all potential internal reviewers before submitting the pre-proposal packet to ORD.\n\n\n\nProgram Overview \nPurpose: Many research questions in biomedical science can be pursued by single investigators and their close collaborators and are adequately supported by individual and multiple PD/PI research grants. However\, the scope of some scientific problems is beyond the capabilities of a small group of investigators. Such complex and challenging research questions benefit from the integrated efforts of teams of research laboratories employing complementary approaches and having multiple areas of intellectual and technical expertise\, and the necessary resources to accomplish a unified scientific goal. Such team-based efforts can produce convergent\, lasting scientific benefits with high impact\, such as the creation of new disciplines of study\, resolution of long standing or intractable problems\, or definition of new areas that challenge current paradigms. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages Collaborative Program Grant applications from institutions/organizations that propose to conduct research to address complex and challenging biomedical problems\, important for the mission of NIGMS\, through deeply integrated\, multidisciplinary research teams. The Collaborative Program Grant is designed to support research in which funding a team of interdependent investigators offers significant advantages over support of individual research project grants. Applications should address critical issues and be sufficiently challenging\, ambitious\, and innovative that objectives could not be achieved by individual investigators. \n  \nBackground: Recent reports (e.g.\, enhancing the effectiveness of team science) have evaluated the benefits of a team science approach to scientific inquiry\, and the need to create flexible funding opportunities that enable interdisciplinary research teams to accomplish goals that could not be achieved individually. The Collaborative Program Grant draws on our past experience and is designed to improve support for interdisciplinary collaborative research across different scientific domains. We also anticipate that these grants will enhance the diversity and interdisciplinarity of participating investigators and provide opportunities to encourage early-stage investigators (ESIs) to engage in team science projects. Successful Collaborative Program Grant applications will bring together scientists to apply complementary approaches to work on an important and well-defined problem. Applications may address any area of science within the NIGMS mission\, which is to support basic research that increases understanding of biological processes at a range of levels\, from molecules and cells\, to tissues\, whole organisms\, and populations. NIGMS also supports research in a limited number of clinical areas that affect multiple organ systems. Truly new interdisciplinary ideas for approaching significant biological problems are encouraged. Applications that bridge the research interests of more than one NIGMS division are also encouraged but must remain within the scope of the NIGMS mission. Research with the overall goal to gain knowledge about a specific organ or organ system\, or the pathophysiology\, treatment\, or cure of a specific disease or condition will\, in most cases\, be more appropriate for another Institute or Center. \nEligibility \n\nOnly one application per institution (normally identified by having a unique DUNS number or NIH IPF number) is allowed per review round. The same or a similar topic may be submitted for subsequent review rounds involving the same or a similar team\, but must be presented as a New application\, not a Resubmission.\nApplications that are not considered in the NIGMS mission will not be reviewed. Given that only one application is permitted per institution per review cycle\, it may be important to contact NIGMS staff before committing to any particular team and its topic area.\nThe application is required to be submitted as a multiple PD/PI application\, with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 PDs/PIs\, all of whom must have an appointment at a domestic institution. Scientists employed solely by foreign institutions may not serve as one of the PD(s)/PIs of the multiple PD/PI team\, although they may be included in the application as collaborators/co-investigators\, consultants or other significant contributors.\n\nAward Information \nAward Budget: While applications may request research program budgets of up to $1.5 million direct costs per year\, it is anticipated that most awards will be between $700\,000-$900\,000 direct costs. Annual inflationary increases are not allowed. The requested budget should be consistent with the number of PDs/PIs and the complexity and needs of the proposed program. An additional $250\,000 direct costs per year may be requested for optional developmental funds to support the addition of ESIs to the program in YRS 2-5. \nAward Project Period: Applications may request up to five years of support. \nAdditional Information \nPrior Consultation with IC staff: NIGMS intends to fund a limited number of applications. Therefore\, consultation with relevant staff at least 10 weeks prior to the application due date is strongly encouraged. Once applicants have identified overall program objectives and PD/PI participants\, NIGMS staff may be able to advise applicants whether the proposed research strategy meets the goals and mission of the Institute\, whether it addresses one or more high priority research areas\, and whether it is appropriate for a Collaborative team program. A collaborative program that is closely related to the goal of a PD/PI’s existing NIGMS-funded research might require that funding be relinquished to avoid overlap. Institute staff will not evaluate the technical and scientific merit of the proposed program in advance; technical and scientific merit will be determined during peer review using the review criteria indicated in this FOA.
