Dr. Susan Girdler is currently a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, and also serves as Director for the UNC Psychiatry Stress and Health Research Program. Dr. Girdler\u2019s long-standing research funding from the National Institute of Mental Health has focused on neuroendocrine and neurosteroid stress reactivity in reproductive mood disorders, including premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and perimenopausal depression.\u00a0 Her research studies the role of psychosocial stress exposure in predicting vulnerability to hormone sensitivity across the female reproductive lifespan.\u00a0 Dr. Girdler\u2019s research also employs RCT designs to examine the beneficial effects of transdermal estradiol on cardiovascular health and mood in perimenopausal women.<\/p>\n
Dr. Girdler is also committed to health disparities research.\u00a0 Her work, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, was the first in the field to systematically identify racial differences in endogenous, stress-responsive pain regulatory mechanisms.\u00a0\u00a0 Those findings have direct implications for understanding racial disparities in clinical pain. \u00a0Dr. Girdler is also the Principal Investigator of an NIH-U01 collaborative research project on\u00a0P<\/strong>eer group\u00a0R<\/strong>esearch\u00a0O<\/strong>n\u00a0M<\/strong>entori<\/strong>ng\u00a0S<\/strong>cie<\/strong>ntists from underrepresented groups (The PROMISE study).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":4327,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false},"affiliation":[35,42],"database-category":[302],"expert-year":[287],"class_list":["post-4326","faculty-expert","type-faculty-expert","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","affiliation-neuroscience-center","affiliation-psychiatry","database-category-women-and-infant-health","expert-year-287","odd"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\n
