UNC may nominate up to three candidates\u2014one each in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering, and Chemistry. Below you will find the internal nomination procedure, award information, and eligibility requirements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Key Dates<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNC Internal deadline: 11:59PM, Wednesday, September 23, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Blavatnik Nominations Deadline: October 28, 2020\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Important Information<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists strive for nominee equality and diversity, and\u00a0<strong>strongly encourage the nomination of women and members of other historically underrepresented groups in science and engineering.<\/strong>\u00a0In support of all scientists\u2019 efforts to increase the diversity of their fields, and in recognition of the many professional service and outreach activities that scientists undertake, starting with the 2021 Award cycle\u00a0<strong>we will require all nominees to submit a Professional Service and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement as part of their nomination materials.<\/strong>\u00a0Details on this new requirement can be found on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blavatnikawards.org\/awards\/national-awards\/nomination-materials-instructions\/\">Nomination Materials and Instructions<\/a>\u00a0page.<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Applicants must have been born in or after 1979. If a candidate is born before 1979, and is approved by the internal review committee, the candidate must work promptly with UNC officials to request a waiver from the foundation under the age limit policy.\u00a0 Note, these are granted only in exceptional circumstances, and should the waiver not be approved, the next runner up in the internal competition will be selected.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Number of Nominations: <\/strong><strong>Each institution is invited to nominate<\/strong>\u00a0up to\u00a0<strong>three outstanding young faculty members<\/strong>, one in each of the three disciplinary categories: Chemistry, Physical Sciences &amp; Engineering, and Life Sciences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To Apply<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Due by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, September 23, 2020:\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Submit the following to the Limited Submissions Team within the Office of Research Development at <a href=\"mailto:Limited_Submissions@unc.edu\">Limited_Submissions@unc.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Nomination Form\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Nominee\u2019s: name, title, contact information, and disciplinary category.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Nominator\u2019s: name, title, and contact information.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nominator\u2019s<\/strong> <strong>rationale for nomination <\/strong>pertaining to the nominee\u2019s independent faculty career (200-word maximum).<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Nominee\u2019s<\/strong> <strong>curriculum vitae<\/strong>. This program focuses on the independent faculty career. Please omit publications from graduate and postdoctoral career. Full text publications and patents need not be included in the internal nomination package; faculty can bold and provide hyperlinks to the publications and patents they wish to highlight in the CV.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nominee\u2019s research summary:<\/strong> Describe up to five of the nominee\u2019s most significant scientific contributions and research accomplishments from their independent career. Include key results, impact on the nominee\u2019s field of study, and the nominee\u2019s specific role in the described work (especially where the nominee is involved in large collaborations). Exclude information contained in the CV (1,000-word maximum).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Full-text Publications and\/or Patents.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A Professional Service and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement <\/strong>(1-page maximum). Letters of support must discuss the independent career only.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Program Description<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Blavatnik National Awards focus largely on independent faculty career. Now entering its eighth year, the Program recognizes and celebrates America\u2019s most innovative and promising faculty-rank scientists and engineers in\u00a0three disciplinary categories: Chemistry, Physical Sciences &amp; Engineering, and Life Sciences. Each year, one nominee in each category is awarded $250,000 in unrestricted funding and honored at the Blavatnik National Awards ceremony at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City as a Blavatnik National Awards Laureate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Click the link to see the list of disciplinary categories: <a href=\"http:\/\/blavatnikawards.org\/awards\/national-awards\/disciplines\/\">http:\/\/blavatnikawards.org\/awards\/national-awards\/disciplines\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Eligibility and Evaluation Criteria<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The nominee must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have been <strong>born in or after 1979 (<\/strong>42 years of age or younger).<\/li>\n<li>Hold a <strong>doctorate degree<\/strong> (PhD, DPhil, MD, DDS, DVM, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>Currently hold a\u00a0<strong>tenured or tenure-track academic faculty position<\/strong> (or equivalent) at an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blavatnikawards.org\/awards\/national-awards\/institutions\/\">invited institution<\/a>\u00a0in the United States.<\/li>\n<li>Currently conduct research as a principal investigator in one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/blavatnikawards.org\/awards\/national-awards\/disciplines\/\">disciplinary categories<\/a> in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences &amp; Engineering, or Chemistry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Age Limit Exceptions\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Age limit exceptions will be considered by the Blavatnik Family Foundation in exceptional circumstances upon a detailed written submission from the nominating institution received by the New York Academy of Sciences by Wednesday, October 14, 2020.
