Recipients of the Award in Pain can be granted $50,000 per year for up to three years. Rita Allen Foundation Scholar grant funds may only be used for direct project expenses, including up to 50 percent of the Scholar\u2019s compensation.<\/p>\n<p>To Apply<\/p>\n<p>Submit the following via <a href=\"https:\/\/ramses2.research.unc.edu\/internal_competitions\">LAMSeS<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a011:59PM, Monday, August 2, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>A letter of nomination\u202f<\/strong>from a department chair, school dean (if there are no departments within a school), or center\/institute director (<strong>maximum 2 pages)<\/strong>, addressing:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>What is innovative\u202fand high-risk about the applicant\u2019s research?<\/li>\n<li>What is significant\/impactful about the applicant\u2019s published\/yet-to-be published work?<\/li>\n<li>Are there specialized\u00a0facilities and resources available to the applicant and their lab?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>A\u202fsummary for the research proposed\u202f(2\u00a0pages)<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>The program <\/strong>calls for strong proposals that incorporate creative, innovative approaches that contribute to\u00a0biomedical science in their areas of interest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Separate page(s)\u00a0can be included for references, if applicable<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Curriculum vitae with a full list of publications and\u202fa\u202flist of current and pending funding.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Names\u202f(alongside contact information)\u00a0of three\u202fexperts,\u202finternal to UNC,\u202fwho could speak knowledgeably about your research as part of an internal review panel,\u202f<\/strong>in the event of an internal review:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Please do not include the names of faculty named on the project, chairs, deans, directors, direct reports or others who have a conflict of interest.<\/li>\n<li>Please notify all potential internal reviewers before submitting the\u202fapplication\u202fto ORD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong>The\u202fnames and titles of\u00a0five\u00a0potential letter of recommendation writers<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>The list must include\u00a0at least two\u00a0external\u00a0individuals\u00a0who\u00a0are\u00a0familiar with the nominee\u2019s work. For each, include a two to three sentence overview of their area of expertise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Program Description<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Rita Allen Foundation Scholars program funds basic biomedical research in the fields of\u00a0<strong>cancer, immunology and neuroscience<\/strong>.\u00a0The program embraces innovative research with above-average risk and groundbreaking possibilities.\u00a0The Foundation funds\u00a0basic biomedical research in the fields of cancer, immunology and neuroscience.\u00a0 Rita Allen Foundation Scholars are distinguished by their bold approaches to basic scientific questions that address problems of global concern, as well as their potential for learning, leadership and collaboration. The program embraces innovative research with above-average risk and groundbreaking possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Eligibility<\/p>\n<p>To be eligible for a Rita Allen Foundation Scholars Award, candidates must have completed their <strong>training and provided persuasive evidence of distinguished achievement or extraordinary promise in research in one of the relevant fields (cancer, immunology, neuroscience. or pain).<\/strong> <strong>United States citizenship is not a requirement<\/strong>; however, awardees must be legally employed at the time of application at a U.S. degree-granting or research institution that is an invited participant in the Rita Allen Foundation Scholars Program.<\/p>\n<p>Institutions should consider the following when considering whom to nominate for the Rita Allen Foundation Scholars program:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Candidates should be independent investigators in the early stages of their careers and research.<\/li>\n<li>The caliber of early-stage investigators suggests nominees would be appointed to tenure-track positions at their respective institutions.<\/li>\n<li>It is preferable that candidates be in the first three years of their tenure track. (This is taken into consideration in the rating of applications by the Scientific Advisory Committee.)<\/li>\n<li>A senior postdoc should not be a candidate; wait until s\/he is in a tenure-track position, as described.<\/li>\n<li>Associate professors should not be candidates.<\/li>\n<li>Candidates must have received committed startup funds from their respective institutions.<\/li>\n<li>Candidates must have lab space from their institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Rita Allen Foundation Scholars may not accept an award from the Beckman Young Investigator Program, Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences, Searle Scholars Program, or Vallee Scholars Program that would take effect beginning in year one of the RAF award.<\/strong> Rita Allen Scholars may apply for awards from these organizations that would take effect beginning in year two of the RAF award.
