UNC Ophthalmology congratulates Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Oculofacial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery expert Christopher Hwang, MD, MPH, for being named among 240 UNC Hospitals physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) named as 2026 Award for Carolina Care Excellence honorees. Each year, the select group of UNC Hospitals and UNC Faculty Physicians physicians and APPs named to the Carolina Care Excellence Award honorees list are collaboratively celebrated for their empathy, compassion, and expertise.

Physician and APP Carolina Care Excellence awardees have received highest patient recommendation scores on the national Press Ganey Medical Practice survey, administered by UNC Hospitals year-round to solicit patient feedback regarding likelihood of recommending one’s provider’s practice to friends and family. This year, Dr. Hwang was among 240 UNC Hospitals physicians and APPs who earned the highest patient recommendation scores and ranked in the Press Ganey’s top quartile nationally for “Likelihood to Recommend.”

Dr. Hwang specializes in adult and pediatric oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery, including eyelid and eyebrow (blepharoplasty/brow lift) surgery, nasolacrimal (tear duct) surgery, orbital surgery, and Mohs reconstruction. He has special interest in surgical and medical management of thyroid-related eye disease and focuses on physician-patient decision-making to create treatment plans that are tailored to patients’ surgery goals.
