
In August 2026, UNC Department of Ophthalmology was pleased to welcome Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology Prashant Tailor, MD, as the newest clinical faculty member of the department’s Vitreo-Retinal Surgery and Retinal Disease division. Dr. Tailor is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon who provides medical and surgical care for diseases of the retina, macula, and vitreous.
Dr. Tailor’s academic work lies at the intersection of retinal disease, clinical artificial intelligence, and health services research. He studies how responsibly designed AI can improve clinical documentation, preparation for patient visits, and communication among patients, ophthalmologists, and other clinicians while preserving physician oversight and patient safety. Dr. Tailor’s broader research interests include retinal outcomes, ophthalmic imaging, health disparities, and the epidemiology and management of retinal disease. His work has been published in JAMA Ophthalmology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Retina, Ophthalmology, and other peer-reviewed journals.
