Cataract Surgical Curriculum | Department of Ophthalmology

UNC has a unique novice cataract rotation in the PGY-3 year. The rotation is supervised by anterior segment surgeons in cornea and glaucoma (Dr. Sinthu Ranjan, Dr. Hussam Banna, Dr. David Fleischman, and Dr. Meredith Klifto). This rotation is paired with a year-long wet lab curriculum led by anterior segment faculty as well as Dr. Kenneth Cohen, a renowned cataract surgery teacher. The curriculum delves deep into topics ranging from intraocular lens calculations, mechanics of chopping, to physical properties of various viscoelastic devices.

Residents perform their first 50 cataract surgeries during this rotation. UNC Ophthalmology’s unique Cataract Clinic UNC Hospitals Hillsborough campus allows residents to take excellent of surgical patients from the first surgical evaluation through the postoperative period. By the end of this course, residents are able to perform entire surgeries independently, and learn to manage complex cases and surgical complications. After this rotation, residents rotate immediately at the Fayetteville VA, allowing them to build on this initial surgical experience.
