Dr. Ulrich earned his medical degree from the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany. After his internship in Internal Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Ulrich completed his ophthalmology residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. He then completed a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Ulrich’s clinical interests include retinal imaging, ocular trauma, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, as well as ROP. Dr. Ulrich has published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented his findings at national and international meetings, and published his doctoral thesis on fibrinolysis in the vitreous. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS).

Dr. Ulrich travels annually to China with second-year UNC Ophthalmology residents as invited guest faculty to train local ophthalmologists on the latest treatments for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). While there he teaches local ophthalmologists and support staff, examines patients, and operates on infants. His efforts result in improved ROP programs with strengthened exam skills and decision-making processes among team members treating these vulnerable children.
