Professor Emeritus Teresa “Terete” Borras, PhD<\/strong>, joined UNC Ophthalmology faculty in 2002. She served as the department’s Director of Research for almost 7 years (2015-2022). Conducting her research at UNC’s Gene Therapy Center, Dr. Borras centered her work around developing novel gene therapy approaches for regulating the eyes’ trabecular meshwork (TM), maintaining intraocular eye pressure and creating a protective mechanism for the eye(s) to prevent development of and treat glaucoma.<\/p>\n

Prior to UNC, Dr. Borras was appointed Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Genetics at Duke University Medical Center’s Department of Ophthalmology (1995-2002). She also served as an Expert Scientist at the NIH’s National Eye Institute. In R&D industry, Dr. Borras’ expertise was integral to serving as Director of Biology for Cus\u00ed Research & Development Center (Laboratorios Cus\u00ed, S.A. – Barcelona) and as Scientific Director for\u00a0PharmaGen S.A. (Madrid, Spain), among other roles.<\/p>\n

Dr. Borr\u00e1s served as a permanent member of the scientific advisory board of The Glaucoma Foundation and of the NIH anterior segment study section. From 2020 to 2024 she served as a member of the National Advisory Eye Council (NAEC), which comprises 12 external members from the vision community who are in charge by law to help guide the National Eye Institute activities. The NAEC advises the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, the National Institutes of Health Director, and the National Eye Institute Director on all policies relating to vision research.<\/div>\n

\nSpecial Interests<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Gene Transfer\/Gene Therapy of the Trabecular Meshwork. Developing novel approaches to treat glaucoma via gene therapy, such as inducible gene therapy vectors for the treatment of steroid glaucoma. Generation of the trabecular meshwork and peripapillary sclera stiffness mouse models using CRISPR\/Cas9 technology, using ex-vivo<\/em> and in-vivo<\/em> models of Pseudoexfoliation Glaucoma.<\/p>\n
