Fresh pig eyes lab are received and supplied at the lab weekly for residents to practice a variety of surgical maneuvers and techniques that are a part of their ophthalmology training. The lab has a 42-person lecture room, <a href=\"https:\/\/haag-streit.com\/en\/products\/categories\/simulators-training\/training-simulators\/eyesi-surgical\">an Eyesi Surgical Simulator<\/a>, 16 stations with operating microscopes, standard ophthalmic microsurgical instruments, 2 phaco machines, and a vitrectomy machine. Each microscope has a video camera that can project to the multiple large screen monitors and the proctor station.\u00a0 Every Wednesdays, eye residents alternate between self-directed learning and formal senior resident or faculty-led sessions. Training is provided in cataract surgery, corneal suturing and transplants, strabismus surgery, scleral buckle and vitrectomy, trabeculectomy, glaucoma tube implantation, and Microincisional Glaucoma Surgery. An annual regional advanced cataract surgery course, which includes residents and faculty from programs in the Carolinas and Virginia, features nationally renowned cataract surgery
