\nThe Cornea & External Disease Fellowship at UNC is an AUPO-FCC compliant program that offers comprehensive exposure to a wide range of corneal and external ocular diseases. \u00a0Under the direct supervision of Drs. Soleimani, Ranjan and Sklar, the fellow will manage cornea, ocular surface, and complex anterior segment surgeries. Fellow will also participate in residency teaching as well as instructive Grand Rounds.<\/p>\n

Surgery<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The fellow will gain hands-on experience in various surgical procedures, including:<\/p>\n

– Penetrating keratoplasty
\n– Lamellar keratoplasty
\n– Scleral graft
\n– Anterior segment reconstruction and iris prosthesis
\n– Ocular surface surgeries
\n– Mastering management of infectious keratitis and chemical burns
\n– Stem cell transplantation
\n– Complex cataract surgery including subluxated lens
\n– Premium IOL implantation and phakic IOLs
\n– Femtosecond assisted cataract surgery
\n– Suture-fixated intraocular lens placement and secondary IOL implantation
\n– Different techniques of keratoconus management<\/p>\n

Program Highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n

One-year program with an option for a second year focusing on advanced surgical skills and research if the fellow is qualified based on the recruitment committee decision<\/p>\n

– High volume of cornea and ocular surface surgeries
\n– Exposure to rare corneal diseases and diverse patient population
\n– Collaboration with the only Burn Center in North Carolina, providing experience with Stevens-Johnson syndrome and ocular surface burns
\n– Familiarity with eye banking through Miracles in Sight Eye Bank
\n– Access to advanced technology, including femtosecond laser-assisted surgeries<\/p>\n

Eligibility<\/strong><\/h4>\n

– Completed residency training in Ophthalmology from an ACGME-accredited program
\n– Eligible for medical licensure in North Carolina
\n– Demonstrated clinical, surgical, and professional competence<\/p>\n
