UNC Department of Ophthalmology is pleased to announce Associate Professor of Ophthalmology David Fleischman, MD, MS, FACS<\/a> <\/strong>has been named Master Surgeon Educator by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Dr. Fleischman is one of only two ophthalmologists across the U.S.<\/strong> to have awarded this highly distinguished ACS title.<\/span>\"\"<\/p>\n

Recognition of Dr. Fleischman’s excellence as a surgeon and as a scholar dates back to his training years. During all four years of residency at UNC (Internal Medicine \/ Ophthalmology), he received the top annual award for resident research. Concluding his last year of residency, Dr. Fleischman was received the Senior Resident Surgical Excellence award (2014). During his Glaucoma fellowship at Duke Eye Center, Dr. Fleischman was among only 21 Heed Ophthalmic Foundation fellows chosen nationwide who were awarded merit funding for their excellence as promising eye surgeons and researchers.<\/p>\n

For almost 10 years as UNC Ophthalmology faculty (2015 – ), Dr. Fleischman has served in multiple departmental and institutional leadership roles, including Glaucoma Fellowship Program Director, Director of Ocular Trauma, and Perioperative Medical Director of the UNC Hospitals Hillsborough campus.\u00a0Dr. Fleischman is interested in the science behind the medical, surgical and laser treatment of glaucoma and cataract. He is actively involved in research, with particular interests in the role of cerebrospinal fluid pressure in glaucoma and the optimization of surgical techniques for the treatment of glaucoma.<\/p>\n

UNC Department of Ophthalmology Chair Don Budenz, MD, MPH<\/strong>, reflected: \u201cDr. Fleischman is one of the finest surgical educators in ophthalmology, as evidenced by his participation in national surgical courses and education of our UNC Eye residents and fellows.
