After receiving recognition from American Academy of Ophthalmology in late 2014, UNC Eye Chairman receives Humanitarian of the Year award from another prestigious professional organization.<\/p>\n

The American Glaucoma Society (AGS) <\/a>recently recognized UNC Eye Chairman Donald L. Budenz, MD, MPH<\/a> with its prestigious Humanitarian of the Year Award.<\/p>\n

The award is intended to \u201crecognize a colleague\u2019s humanitarian efforts for the preservation of vision and to improve the quality of life for those in need.\u201d It was presented in a ceremony at the AGS 25th Annual Meeting, held February 26 \u2013 March 1, 2015 in Coronado, CA, just outside of San Diego.<\/p>\n

Dr. Budenz is an editorial reviewer for numerous medical journals, is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Glaucoma, and is the Editor of the Glaucoma issue of Current Opinion in Ophthalmology. He has been the principal investigator in a number of clinical trials, including the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Concurrent with his research, Dr. Budenz has been published widely in the field of glaucoma. He has authored a textbook, Atlas of Visual Fields<\/a>, contributed chapters to several other books, and written or co-authored more than 175 peer-reviewed journal articles.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dr. Budenz has been a guest lecturer at numerous universities, hospitals, and medical societies worldwide.<\/p>\n

Since 1995, he has been providing eye care, teaching, research, administrative, and financial support to several eye clinics in Ghana through his affiliation with Christian Eye Ministry, which he took over in 2009.<\/p>\n
