The <a href=\"https:\/\/aapos.org\/glossary\/cortical-visual-impairment\">American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS)<\/a> states that CVI is the most frequent cause of pediatric visual impairment in the U.S. and developed countries worldwide.\u00a0 Also known as Cortical Visual Impairment, CVI characteristically is seen in infants or youth who have experienced prematurity, decreased blood supply, brain malformation, hydrocephalus, head trauma and other neurologic conditions. Infants with CVI show variable degrees of impairment, from mildly decreased visual behavior to roving eye movements with complete absence of response to visual stimulation.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6181 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ophth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1268\/2022\/07\/Whitfield-PEDS-pt-exam2-scaled-e1693582483870-300x234.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Whitfield giving exam\" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ophth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1268\/2022\/07\/Whitfield-PEDS-pt-exam2-scaled-e1693582483870-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ophth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1268\/2022\/07\/Whitfield-PEDS-pt-exam2-scaled-e1693582483870-600x467.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ophth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1268\/2022\/07\/Whitfield-PEDS-pt-exam2-scaled-e1693582483870.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>UNC Ophthalmology joins peers in the field in supporting increased awareness of CVI and having children showing signs of this condition to be examined by a pediatric ophthalmologist.
