Beverly Raney Visiting Professorship and Orthopaedic Conference, marking a welcome return to in-person for a longstanding educational event that benefits current and alumnus UNC Orthopaedics Surgery faculty and residents. Each year, this event provides orthopaedic surgeons updates on the latest research innovations, advances in surgical techniques, and changes in the orthopaedic practice environment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1971, the Annual R. Beverly Raney Visiting Professorship and Orthopaedic Conference was established to honor the late Dr. R. Beverly Raney Sr. (1906-1991), who was named the first Chief of UNC School of Medicine\u2019s new orthopaedic service after North Carolina Memorial Hospital was completed in 1952. While leading this service over 15 years, Dr. Raney became the first faculty member of the UNC Department of Orthopaedics. Dr. Raney was renowned for growing orthopaedic patient care across North Carolina. He was instrumental to development of the state\u2019s Crippled Children\u2019s Clinics and Programs, was a charter member of the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association, established the orthopaedic service at Watts Hospital, and expanded orthopaedic services at Duke Hospital after becoming Duke University\u2019s first orthopaedic surgery resident. Beverly Raney Visiting Professorship and Orthopaedic Conference is a forum for graduating 5<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-year UNC Orthopaedic residents to present scholarly work that demonstrates their competence in leading an investigative project that advances orthopaedic science.\u00a0 In 2022, five graduating UNC Orthopaedics residents \u2013 Drs. Colleen Balkam, Ryan Barnes, Karly Lorbeer, Chinmay Paranjape, and Joshua Shapiro \u2013 gave presentations of their research projects. At the resident graduation banquet following the Raney Lecture, Dr. Ryan Barnes received the Resident Research Award for most well-developed and best-presented research project. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Department\u2019s Vice Chair of Research and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Kinesiology Dr. Joe Hart moderated this year\u2019s R. Beverly Raney Lecture. Dr. Hart noted of the five presented scholarly projects:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe presentations at the Department\u2019s 2022 [Raney] Lecture were each truly remarkable and represent the impressive potential of our residents to become physician scientists.\u00a0 The scholarly works presented are testaments to the capacity of Orthopaedists in training to ask clinically relevant questions and leverage their knowledge and determination to advance orthopaedic science.\u00a0 These projects were each outstanding interdisciplinary collaborations and reflect a true commitment to team science and innovation leading to advancements in patient care.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The highlight of the Annual R. Beverly Raney Visiting Professorship is the R. Beverly Raney Lecture. This year, University of California at San Diego School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Chair Dr. Susan Bukata, served as the 2022 R Beverly Raney Lecture Keynote Speaker. Dr. Bukata is notably the fourth female chair appointed to lead an academic orthopaedic department nationwide. In her field, she holds multiple leadership positions in orthopaedic education and research, among them: 1) Orthopaedic Research Society Executive Board of Directors; 2) American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery Written Examination Field Task Force; and 3) Musculoskeletal Tumor Society Education Committee. Dr. Bukata has been named a \u201cTop Doctor\u201d by multiple major media outlets including <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Castle Connolly America<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Los Angeles Magazine<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hollywood Reporter<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and she has been recognized with several Patients\u2019 Choice Awards.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In her Raney Lecture presentation &#8212; <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Teams Are How the Magic Happens<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2013 Dr. Bukata described the clinical and procedural continuum of patient care inherent to orthopaedic practice as critically reliant upon a whole team that draws its strength from the contributions of individual providers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ortho\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/406\/2022\/06\/Susan-Bukata-Raney-Lecture-1-scaled-e1655068655329.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5122 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ortho\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/406\/2022\/06\/Susan-Bukata-Raney-Lecture-1-scaled-e1655068655329.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ortho\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/406\/2022\/06\/Susan-Bukata-Raney-Lecture-1-scaled-e1655068655329.jpeg 260w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ortho\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/406\/2022\/06\/Susan-Bukata-Raney-Lecture-1-scaled-e1655068655329-150x118.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr. Bukata noted: \u201cIn orthopaedics, we are often caring for patients who expect their aging body and the skeleton within it to remain the same over a lifetime. Wilson Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery Dr. James Sanders concluded: \u201cThe [Annual R. Beverly Raney Lecture] and presentations are a great venue for our residents and faculty to interact with leading orthopaedists and this year\u2019s visit with Susan Bukata was truly outstanding. Dr. Bukata provided great teaching, and our senior residents presented their incredibly high-quality research.
