Dr. Koman is a tenured Professor, Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation<\/em>\u00a0at\u00a0Wake Forest University School of Medicine\u00a0<\/em>and the President of the\u00a0Musculoskeletal Service Institute of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist<\/em>. After\u00a0graduation\u00a0<\/em>from\u00a0Duke University<\/em>, he attended.\u00a0Duke University School of Medicine.\u00a0<\/em>Postgraduate training at\u00a0Duke University<\/em>\u00a0included one year of Pediatrics, one year of General Surgery, four years of Orthopaedic Surgery and six months of Hand and Microsurgery.<\/p>\n

He was an assistant professor on the Duke faculty until 1981 when he was recruited as the 5th<\/span>\u00a0Orthopaedic surgeon at the\u00a0Bowman Gray School of Medicine<\/em>\u00a0(now\u00a0Wake Forest University School of Medicine<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Dr. Koman is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery with subspecialty certification in Hand Surgery.\u00a0He is currently a tenured professor in the departments of Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatrics and vascular Surgery and a \u00a0member of the graduate faculty.<\/em><\/p>\n

As Chair, the\u00a0Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation<\/em>\u00a0has tripled in size since with 97 clinical faculty, 5 PhD faculty, two residencies (Orthopaedic Surgery and Podiatric Surgery); 5 fellowship programs and a physician scientist postdoctoral program, which has\u00a0surgery has trained more MD\/PhDs than any clinical Department within WFUSM.\u00a0<\/em>Forty one percent (41%) of the orthopaedic residents trained within the past 10 years have entered academic Orthopaedic Surgery. In addition to orthopaedic surgeons< the department includes Physical medicine and rehabilitation and Podiatry.<\/p>\n

Dr. Koman has served on numerous committees for regional and national orthopaedic organizations, has presented over a 1,500 didactic and Socratic\u00a0 lectures; has chaired or participated in over a hundred scientific panels; has lectured at orthopaedic meetings and medical centers in 30 states and 10 countries, and has authored more than 250 scientific articles and book chapters. He has been awarded three patents and has received more than five million dollars in grants and awards including a National Institute of Health RO 1 grant in microvascular physiology.<\/p>\n

Dr. Koman is a member of 20 professional societies and has served as President of the\u00a0American Society for Surgery of the Hand<\/em>, the\u00a0Eastern Orthopaedic Association<\/em>, the\u00a0North Carolina Orthopaedic Society<\/em>, and the\u00a0North Carolina Society for Surgery of the Hand<\/em>\u00a0(which he founded), the\u00a0Southern Orthopaedic Association<\/em>, the\u00a0Clinical Orthopaedic Society<\/em>, and the\u00a0Southeastern Hand Association<\/em>.\u00a0 Dr. Koman is Editor-in-Chief of the\u00a0Journal of Surgical Orthopaedic Advances<\/em>. He reviews manuscripts for more than 10 national and international journals.<\/p>\n

Dr. Koman and his research team received the\u00a0Kappa Delta<\/strong>\u00a0\/ Clinical\u00a0Research Award,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation<\/em>\u00a0twice<\/strong>\u00a0–in 1999 for their work involving basic science and translational research in\u00a0microvascular physiology\u00a0<\/em>and in 2019 for their 30 years of seminal work in basic and clinical applications\u00a0Botulinum toxins<\/em><\/p>\n

In 2004, Dr. Koman was presented the\u00a0Huene Award<\/em>\u00a0by the\u00a0POSNA.<\/em>\u00a0Dr. Koman has also been acknowledged by WFUSM with the \u00a0Established Investigator in Clinical Sciences Award<\/em>\u00a0(2006) and the\u00a0Byrum Mentorship\u00a0 Award\u00a0<\/em>(2021); an Honorary Doctorate from the\u00a0University of Athens<\/em>\u00a0in 2009; the\u00a0Distinguished Southern Orthopaedist<\/em>\u00a0from the SOA (2011);\u00a0 the\u00a0American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons<\/em>\u00a0Achievement Award (2012);\u00a0 the\u00a0Honored Surgeon in the State of North Carolina from\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0NCOA (<\/em>2013); the\u00a0Nix Award in Medical Ethics<\/em>\u00a0from the\u00a0Clinical Orthopaedic Society<\/em>\u00a0(2019); the \u00a0Honored Professor award from Orthopaedic Summit<\/em>\u00a0(2019)and the\u00a0A Lee Osterman Award<\/em>\u00a0from the ASSH9 2022) He has been recognized on the\u00a0best doctor<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0top doctor<\/em>\u00a0lists since their inception.<\/p>\n

Dr. Koman was born in Winchester Virginia, has been married for 51 years to Leigh Emerson, and has 2 children (Amy and Alex) and 3 grandchildren Zell, Flynn and Nicholas). He was captain of the division I Maryland State scholastic champion tennis team and played freshman tennis at Duke. During college he taught tennis professionally. Current avocations include travel, time with family, golf, and recently model trains.<\/p>\n
