Megan Patterson, MD, to Professor, effective May 1, 2025.<\/strong> This historic milestone makes Dr. Patterson the first woman in the department\u2019s history to achieve this prestigious rank.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4710 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ortho\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/406\/2019\/05\/Patterson-2022a-scaled-e1676897420122-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"Image of J. Megan Patterson\" width=\"146\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ortho\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/406\/2019\/05\/Patterson-2022a-scaled-e1676897420122-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ortho\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/406\/2019\/05\/Patterson-2022a-scaled-e1676897420122-150x213.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ortho\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/406\/2019\/05\/Patterson-2022a-scaled-e1676897420122.jpg 423w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/>Dr. Patterson has been a vital member of the department since 2009, helping to shape its clinical, educational, and cultural landscape. In addition to her new role as Professor, she holds several key leadership positions, Vice Chair of Culture and Engagement, Division Chief of Hand and Microsurgery, Director of Ambulatory Surgery for the department, and Director of the Peripheral Nerve Center. Her clinical expertise, mentorship, and advocacy have left an indelible mark across the department.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Patterson credits her upbringing for laying the foundation for her success. \u201cI came to UNC already incredibly fortunate because\u2013number one\u2013I grew up in a very supportive family with parents who are both surgeons who always encouraged me.\u00a0 My mother is a surgeon, so I grew up knowing that it is absolutely possible to both be a successful surgeon and have a family \u2013 I watched my mom do it, so I had no preconceived notions that I couldn\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">She also highlights the importance of her partnership with her husband, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=ganesh+kamath+unc&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\">Dr. Ganesh Kamath<\/a>, who is also a faculty member in the department. \u201cI have an incredibly supportive spouse who understands exactly what I&#8217;m doing. He knows if I say, \u2018I&#8217;m stressed about a case tomorrow\u2019 he knows exactly what I&#8217;m talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Patterson emphasizes the support she has received from colleagues throughout her career, particularly from chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=jim+sanders+unc&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\">Dr. Jim Sanders<\/a>, former senior partner Dr. Don Bynum and her two current partners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ortho\/directory\/draeger\/\">Dr. Reid Draeger<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ortho\/directory\/knoll\/\">Dr. Greg Knoll<\/a>. \u201cThe success that I have is a combination of the foundation that I came in with, both my upbringing and my current support from my family, and my [current and former] chairman(s) and my partners. I have great partners and a great department.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Looking to the future, Dr. Patterson is focused on elevating those around her and mentoring the next generation of Orthopaedic Surgeons\u2014especially those pursuing careers in hand and microsurgery. Her advice for new residents and faculty: \u201cRespect those around you, because that respect will come back to you one day; and don\u2019t forget to celebrate the little victories and joys throughout your day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Congratulations to Dr. Patterson on this well-deserved achievement!<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Orthopaedics is proud to announce the promotion of J.
