{"id":6765,"date":"2025-09-10T10:12:53","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T14:12:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ortho\/?p=6765"},"modified":"2025-09-10T10:12:53","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T14:12:53","slug":"bme-and-orthopaedics-faculty-receive-multi-institutional-nih-r01-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ortho\/2025\/09\/bme-and-orthopaedics-faculty-receive-multi-institutional-nih-r01-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"BME and Orthopaedics Faculty Receive Multi-Institutional NIH R01 Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BME and Orthopaedics faculty receive multi-institutional NIH R01 grant to guide personalize treatment for Achilles Tendinopathy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An interdisciplinary team from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bme.unc.edu\/\">Lampe Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering<\/a>, the Department of Orthopaedics, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udel.edu\/\">University of Delaware<\/a> has received a new 5-year, $3M R01 Grant from the National Institutes of Health to explore Achilles subtendon structure-function relationships and their role in treatment outcomes in patients with Achilles tendinopathy.<\/p>\n<p>The project will be led by PI and Lampe Joint BME alumnus\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bme.udel.edu\/people\/stephanie-cone\/\"><strong>Dr. Stephanie Cone<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(University of Delaware) and UNC subaward PI and BME Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bme.unc.edu\/bme-person\/jason-franz\/\"><strong>Dr. Jason Franz<\/strong><\/a>, and will see pivotal contributions from BME\/Orthopaedics Assistant Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bme.unc.edu\/bme-person\/geoffrey-handsfield\/\"><strong>Dr. Geoffrey Handsfield<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and Physical Therapy Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.udel.edu\/academics\/colleges\/chs\/departments\/pt\/faculty\/karin-gravare-silbernagel\/\"><strong>Dr. Karin Silbernagel<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(University of Delaware).<\/p>\n<p>Achilles tendinopathy is a painful and debilitating condition, and unfortunately the gold-standard treatment \u2013 exercise-based therapy \u2013 is sub-optimal in nearly half of all patients with high recurrence rates. The complex anatomy of the Achilles tendon, which connects the heel to three separate muscles in an anatomical arrangement that varies across people, may lead to this inconsistency in success rates with the current one-size-fits-all treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Together, the research team will integrate advanced\u00a0<em>in vivo<\/em>\u00a0techniques, including novel biomechanical sensors and cutting-edge medical imaging, with state-of-the-art modeling approaches to enhance our understanding of anatomic variability in Achilles tendinopathy toward more effective, personalized clinical
