Positioned at the intersection of biology and medicine, the field plays a critical role in improving our understanding of disease development and translating discoveries into improved diagnostics and treatments.

The PhD Program in Pathobiology and Translational Science is housed within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and is closely aligned with the department’s clinical divisions. Our program provides rigorous training in disease mechanisms and translational research, leading to a Doctor of Philosophy degree in pathology.

Graduate students are trained to apply cellular and molecular biology methods to investigate how disease-causing agents interact with cellular systems—and how these interactions manifest at the molecular, cellular, tissue, and organism levels. This knowledge forms the foundation for improving patient care and advancing the future of medicine.

We emphasize a multilevel approach to disease research using state-of-the-art techniques, preparing graduates for impactful careers across academia, industry, and government. Our alumni contribute to human health by driving innovation in disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Explore our website to learn more about our program, student research, recent publications, awards, and community activities. You can also follow us on [Twitter/X] for updates on student achievements, publications, and events.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Graduate Program in Pathobiology and Translational Science is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to:

Deepen their understanding of the origins, pathogenesis, and physiological consequences of human disease

Develop and apply state-of-the-art experimental and investigative techniques in pathology

Conduct impactful research that advances our understanding of disease mechanisms

Gain practical experience in scientific communication, including writing manuscripts and research proposals

Prepare for diverse careers in science, including basic and translational research, biotechnology, industrial R&D, government, regulatory science, and education

This mission aligns with and supports the mission of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the mission of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, with a shared commitment to excellence in research, education, and the advancement of human health.

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine home

Introduction and Mission Statement A unique environment for graduate training in pathobiology and translational science.
