The training year is intended for board-eligible or board-certified anatomic pathologists who want progressive responsibility and to develop excellent diagnostic skills in renal pathology in an academic practice environment.

The Nephropathology Division specializes in the evaluation of medical kidney diseases using light microscopy, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy. Our expert faculty provide educational framework to develop fellows’ skills at conducting morphologic and clinicopathologic assessments. Our practitioners work closely with nephrologists to guide patient management. We are deeply committed to education. Trainees gain experience with a broad spectrum of native and transplant kidney biopsies, and benefit from case-based learning, collaborative conferences, and exposure to research in glomerular disease and transplant pathology.

Our premier nephropathology laboratory offers expert diagnostic services, providing comprehensive renal pathology reports in a timely manner. Our laboratory conducts the technical and professional components of renal pathology services for the UNC Medical Center.

Graduated responsibility is a hallmark of our department’s residency and fellowship programs. This fellowship is a hybrid fellowship-instructorship position with an emphasis on independent sign-out responsibility for the majority of the year. Fellows begin with an initial period of supervision in working up the full range of neprhopathology cases, and progress to independent sign out of a full volume service in a busy academic medical practice. Fellows are credentialed for independent sign-out in the fall. During the spring semester fellows undertake full independent sign-out workload, developing the necessary skills for future careers as neprhopathologists.

For detailed information about Nephropathology at UNC, please visit our website.

Program Requirements

Applicants must possess an MD or DO degree, be board-eligible/board-certified in Anatomic Pathology, and be eligible for medical licensure in North Carolina and appointment to the faculty of UNC Healthcare.

Applications and Timeline

We will begin accepting applications annually in June (approximately 22 months before the anticipated July start date).
