Founded in 2020 by graduate students Cherise Glodowski, PhD, MPhil, MD candidate, and Alina Hamilton, PhD, MS, the WHMC has become a central hub for connecting clinicians and researchers with a shared interest in improving women\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"624\" data-end=\"1307\">The WHMC&#8217;s mission centers on fostering a trainee-focused, unified community that spans disciplines to advance women\u2019s health research and to foster new training and collaborations. The organization was conceived with the goal of bridging the gap between diverse areas of research, training, and clinical care. With support from the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, as well as the Center for Women\u2019s Health Research at UNC, the WHMC has grown significantly over the years, becoming a vital resource for trainees and faculty alike. It offers a platform for developing community partnerships, hosting educational seminars, and creating robust training programs for graduate and medical students.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1349\"><strong data-start=\"1313\" data-end=\"1349\">Current Initiatives and Projects<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1351\" data-end=\"1638\">The WHMC&#8217;s initiatives are designed to create awareness of the diverse research occurring at UNC related to women\u2019s health while also facilitating collaboration and training opportunities across disciplines. Some of the primary initiatives currently being undertaken by the WHMC include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1640\" data-end=\"3281\">\n<li data-start=\"1640\" data-end=\"2012\">\n<p data-start=\"1642\" data-end=\"2012\"><strong data-start=\"1642\" data-end=\"1675\">WHMC Hot Topic Seminar Series<\/strong>: This monthly seminar series brings together a diverse audience, including basic science and clinical faculty, graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, and undergraduates. The seminars are curated by the WHMC Hot Topic Committee and provide opportunities for attendees to engage with cutting-edge research on women\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2014\" data-end=\"2283\">\n<p data-start=\"2016\" data-end=\"2283\"><strong data-start=\"2016\" data-end=\"2047\">Journal Club Trainee Cohort<\/strong>: Aimed at fostering a community of trainees interested in women\u2019s health research, the Journal Club allows participants to network, engage with faculty, and get involved in WHMC leadership while contributing to educational initiatives.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2285\" data-end=\"2617\">\n<p data-start=\"2287\" data-end=\"2617\"><strong data-start=\"2287\" data-end=\"2346\">Women\u2019s Health Scholarly Concentration Program (WH-SCP)<\/strong>: Launched in Fall 2024, the WH-SCP offers training for UNC medical students interested in women\u2019s health. The inaugural cohort of 12 students is supported by faculty co-directors Drs. Marcella Willis-Gray and Asha Talati, as well as a dedicated group of student leaders.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2619\" data-end=\"2979\">\n<p data-start=\"2621\" data-end=\"2979\"><strong data-start=\"2621\" data-end=\"2708\">Graduate Certificate Program in Women\u2019s Health and Sex Differences Research (WHSDR)<\/strong>: This new program, set to launch in Fall 2025, will offer PhD students a multidisciplinary education focused on women\u2019s health and sex-specific research. Graduates will gain the knowledge and mentorship needed to tackle advanced research questions in this crucial field.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2981\" data-end=\"3281\">\n<p data-start=\"2983\" data-end=\"3281\"><strong data-start=\"2983\" data-end=\"3007\">Community Engagement<\/strong>: The WHMC fosters community engagement through joint events, workshops, and informational sessions. Additionally, the WHMC Community Engagement team curates a monthly Women\u2019s Health Newsletter featuring research updates, job opportunities, and interviews with WHMC members.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"3283\" data-end=\"3329\"><strong data-start=\"3287\" data-end=\"3329\">The WHMC Leadership and Core Committee<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3331\" data-end=\"3695\">The WHMC\u2019s growth from a small planning committee to a robust, 35-member Core Committee reflects its success in creating a collaborative and dynamic environment. The leadership of the WHMC is currently shared by co-chairs Cherise Glodowski, Sean Connelly, Elizabeth Thomas, and Kylie Hutchison, with faculty advisor Dr. Melinda Yates providing invaluable guidance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3697\" data-end=\"3775\">The WHMC Core Committee is organized into six teams that lead key initiatives:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3777\" data-end=\"4242\">\n<li data-start=\"3777\" data-end=\"3830\"><strong data-start=\"3779\" data-end=\"3805\">Hot Topic Seminar Team<\/strong>: Led by Elizabeth Thomas<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3831\" data-end=\"3901\"><strong data-start=\"3833\" data-end=\"3854\">Journal Club Team<\/strong>: Co-led by Maggie DeMonia and Sophia I. Malave<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3902\" data-end=\"3993\"><strong data-start=\"3904\" data-end=\"3933\">Community Engagement Team<\/strong>: Co-led by Kate Aberman, Sarah Rebbeor, and Kylie Hutchison<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3994\" data-end=\"4127\"><strong data-start=\"3996\" data-end=\"4051\">Women\u2019s Health Scholarly Concentration Program Team<\/strong>: Co-led by Chase Binion, Sean Connelly, Cherise Glodowski, and Mia Wiegmann<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4128\" data-end=\"4199\"><strong data-start=\"4130\" data-end=\"4175\">Graduate Trainee Program Development Team<\/strong>: Led by Kylie Hutchison<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4200\" data-end=\"4242\"><strong data-start=\"4202\" data-end=\"4222\">Fundraising Team<\/strong>: Led by Clare Stull<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4244\" data-end=\"4506\">The WHMC has continued to attract passionate and committed individuals who are dedicated to advancing women\u2019s health. As it evolves, the consortium\u2019s leadership remains focused on fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and supportive environment for all members.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4244\" data-end=\"4506\"><strong>Quotes and Acknowledgments<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4567\" data-end=\"4729\">Dr. Glodowski, co-founder and co-chair of the WHMC, shared her reflections on the consortium\u2019s growth and its impact on the field of women\u2019s health research:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4731\" data-end=\"5382\">\u201cMy dream is to build a thriving community of researchers and clinicians who share a common goal of improving the health of women. Women\u2019s health research at UNC is superb and multi-faceted but is often siloed. I feel strongly about creating a tether-point to connect the research and clinical work in this multidisciplinary field, especially for early-career trainees. We are stronger when we hear fresh perspectives and tackle big problems together. I am floored by how much the consortium has grown in the last 5 years, and am deeply proud of working with such a passionate team who roll up their sleeves and make this whole initiative possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5423\" data-end=\"6053\">Dr. Glodowski also expressed her deep gratitude for the support and mentorship the WHMC has received since its founding. She acknowledged Dr. Russell Broaddus for his unwavering support and championing of the WHMC, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine for\u00a0 housing the initiative, and the late Dr. Wendy Brewster for her leadership and encouragement to develop the WHMC. She also recognized Dr. Jessica Bowser and Dr. Melinda Yates, the consortium\u2019s faculty advisors, for their guidance, as well as her brilliant co-founder, Dr. Alina Hamilton, for her vision and partnership in bringing the WHMC to life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6078\" data-end=\"6560\">The Women\u2019s Health Multidisciplinary Consortium continues to grow and evolve, creating a dynamic and supportive environment for trainees and faculty dedicated to advancing women\u2019s health research and care.
