Title: Journal Club: Effect of the Serious Illness Care Program in Outpatient Oncology

Bio: Dr. Nakamura is a psychiatrist and clinical researcher with advanced training in psycho-oncology and a career focus to improve cognitive outcomes in patients with cancer. Specifically, he is interested in attenuating cognitive decline experienced by patients during cancer treatment. His goal for this line of research is to rigorously evaluate objectively measured and patient-reported outcomes of cognition, understand of how other psychosocial and biological variables impact cognition, and test pharmacological interventions to prevent or treat the cognitive consequences of cancer and cancer care. He has recently been awarded the K12 BIRCWH award to investigate the use of memantine to mitigate cognitive decline in patients with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy. Related to his interest in cognitive outcomes in cancer patients, he is also the lead investigator on a randomized controlled trial, currently underway, investigating the use of high dose intravenous thiamine for prevention of delirium during hospitalization for bone marrow transplantation.
