Michelle grew up in Jacksonville, Florida with her younger brother and parents. She attended the University of Florida for her undergraduate\u202fdegree and majored in Neurobiological Sciences and a minor in African Studies. After graduating she attended the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine and participated in the SELECT program, where she spent half of medical school in Tampa, Florida and the other half in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Inspired by lectures on health systems and research, she extended medical school to get her dual degree in a Master of Public Health specializing in Epidemiology.<\/p>\n
Michelle was lucky enough to meet her husband, Shabaaz, in medical school. They applied together for residency and both trained at the University of North Carolina, Michelle in Family Medicine and Shabaaz in Plastic Surgery. During her residency training, Michelle realized how powerful Palliative Care is within her care of adults and children. She was able to work with the UNC Palliative Care team and In-patient Hospice Unit and loved the team-based approach and collaborative training. Training during the pandemic helped illuminate gaps in the healthcare system especially related to end-of-life care. Michelle feels passionately about expanding access to quality care throughout North Carolina and preparing primary care providers throughout the state to provide excellent symptom management.<\/p>\n
Michelle and Shabaaz spend their free time enjoying their two dogs, Lando and Harvey. They have also enjoyed meeting a wonderful crew of Carolina friends and spend time exploring the state with hikes and food adventures.
