Scholarship is broadly defined and may include quality improvement, medical education, clinical research, advocacy, community engagement, or reflective writing.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Scholarly Requirements<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>All fellows complete the following scholarly activities during fellowship:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Submit a clinical case presentation or clinical vignette to the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) Annual Assembly.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in a quality improvement (QI) project focused on improving the delivery of hospice and palliative care.<\/li>\n<li>Complete an engaged scholarship project that contributes to clinical care, education, community partnerships, health systems improvement, or advancement of the field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Scholarly Opportunities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Fellows work closely with faculty mentors to identify projects that align with their interests and career goals. Some examples of current and recent projects include:<\/p>\n<h4>Quality Improvement and Clinical Innovation<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Implementation of the Respiratory Distress Observation Scale (RDOS) within the Inpatient Hospice Unit<\/li>\n<li>Development of best practices for opioid prescribing and urine drug screening\u00a0in outpatient palliative care<\/li>\n<li>Quality improvement initiatives focused on compassionate extubation, ICU-to-hospice transitions, and comfort care pathways<\/li>\n<li>Emergency Department\u2013Palliative Care integration initiatives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Medical Education<\/h4>\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-8 col-md-8 col-xs-12 col-sm-8 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li>Advance care planning and serious illness communication training for Internal Medicine residents<\/li>\n<li>Needs-based palliative care curricula for Anesthesiology trainees<\/li>\n<li>Narrative medicine and reflective practice curriculum development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Specialty and Population-Focused Palliative Care<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Dementia and nursing home palliative care initiatives<\/li>\n<li>Young adult and cystic fibrosis palliative care projects<\/li>\n<li>Pediatric palliative care quality improvement and bereavement programs<\/li>\n<li>Palliative care initiatives in sickle cell disease and nephrology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-4 col-md-4 col-xs-12 col-sm-4 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3976\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pcare\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/503\/2026\/06\/Ashley-Allen-225x300.png\" alt=\"Ashley Allen poster presentation\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pcare\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/503\/2026\/06\/Ashley-Allen-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pcare\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/503\/2026\/06\/Ashley-Allen-600x800.png 600w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pcare\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/503\/2026\/06\/Ashley-Allen.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Global and Community-Engaged Scholarship<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Validation of the Quality of Dying and Death-Revised Global Version (QODD-RGV) in Malawi<\/li>\n<li>Collaborations focused on improving access to palliative care in low-resource settings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Mentorship and Dissemination<\/h4>\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-8 col-md-8 col-xs-12 col-sm-8 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<p>Each fellow is paired with faculty mentors who provide individualized guidance.
