The PL-1 resident functions as a primary care physician and develops skills and knowledge necessary to understand, evaluate, and manage common pediatric problems on the ward, in the newborn nursery, in the NICU and in the Emergency Department. The typical first year’s schedule consists of:

  • 2-3 inpatient months at UNC
  • 3-4 months at WakeMed, Cone Ward or Cone Clinic
  • 1 month in the NICU
  • 1 month in the Emergency Department
  • 1 month in the Newborn Nursery
  • 1 Community month with Night Float
  • 2 subspecialty months
  • Longitudinal Advocacy curriculum
