{"id":27460,"date":"2024-07-25T16:57:32","date_gmt":"2024-07-25T20:57:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pediatrics\/education\/?page_id=27460"},"modified":"2024-07-26T12:07:04","modified_gmt":"2024-07-26T16:07:04","slug":"training","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pediatrics\/education\/fellowships\/pediatric-hematology-oncology-fellowship\/training\/","title":{"rendered":"Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Education Conferences<\/h2>\n<p>Throughout fellowship, fellows participate in educational activities within our division, within UNC, and within the pediatric hematology-oncology community at large:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The pediatric hematology-oncology faculty provides a weekly fellow education conference.<\/li>\n<li>Biweekly board review lead by the fellows with faculty participation<\/li>\n<li>Fellows present patients and review clinical trials in a weekly tumor board with pathology, radiology, and surgical subspecialties.<\/li>\n<li>Monthly Classical Hematology Conference and Morbidity, Mortality, Improvement Conference<\/li>\n<li>During their research years, fellows are encouraged to present at Pediatric Grand Rounds and the UNC Day of Scholarship.<\/li>\n<li>We encourage all of our fellows to attend national meetings and present research findings or quality-improvement projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Procedures &amp; On-call Schedules<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Throughout their training fellows receive continuous feedback and exposure to essential pediatric hematology-oncology skills:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lumbar punctures<\/li>\n<li>Intrathecal chemotherapy administration<\/li>\n<li>Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy<\/li>\n<li>Bone marrow harvesting for transplantation<\/li>\n<li>Enrollment on clinical trials<\/li>\n<li>Effective communication<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Weekend and holiday call is divided between the first-, second-, and third-year fellows. Fellows covering the inpatient services take call from home <strong>1-2 weeknights per week<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Combined Internal Medicine-pediatrics Training<\/h2>\n<p>Applicants trained in both internal medicine and pediatrics can apply for a four-year combined fellowship. Graduates with dual training are uniquely equipped to manage care transitions for young adults, offer lifelong care to patients with chronic disorders, and provide long-term follow-up for childhood cancer survivors.<\/p>\n<p>After completing their first year of pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship, fellows in the combined medicine-pediatric program transition the UNC Department of Internal Medicine for another year of clinical training.
