{"id":27462,"date":"2024-07-25T17:00:54","date_gmt":"2024-07-25T21:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pediatrics\/education\/?page_id=27462"},"modified":"2024-07-26T11:56:41","modified_gmt":"2024-07-26T15:56:41","slug":"curriculum","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pediatrics\/education\/fellowships\/pediatric-hematology-oncology-fellowship\/curriculum\/","title":{"rendered":"Curriculum"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>First Year<\/h2>\n<p><strong>First-year<\/strong> fellows are immersed in clinical hematology-oncology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A typical first-year schedule includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inpatient: 16 weeks<\/li>\n<li>BMT: 12 weeks<\/li>\n<li>Consult Service: 6 weeks<\/li>\n<li>Outpatient Hematology and Oncology Clinic: 6 weeks<\/li>\n<li>Research: 2 weeks (1 week in Fall, 1 week in Spring)<\/li>\n<li>Radiation oncology, transfusion medicine, pathology, palliative care: 6 weeks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We set aside time during the first year for fellows to find research mentors and develop research questions.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Second Year<\/h2>\n<p>Fellows spend the <strong>second year<\/strong> refining their research questions, learning research methodology, and gathering data.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fellows have the opportunity to apply for research support through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/training\/\">UNC Lineberger Cancer Center<\/a>\u00a0or NIH-funded T32 training grants in a variety of disciplines, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/bloodresearchcenter\/investigators\/\">hematology<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.unc.edu\/education\/fellowships\/ccpptp\/\">clinical pharmacology<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/immunotherapy-training-program\/\">immunotherapy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Interested fellows can receive tuition assistance to pursue graduate degrees and certificates from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sph.unc.edu\/resource-pages\/degrees-and-certificates\/\">UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Second-year fellows spend one half-day each week in the outpatient clinic, seeing new and established hematology-oncology patients with their faculty preceptor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Third Year<\/h2>\n<p>During the <strong>third year<\/strong>, fellows prepare for the next stage of their careers: completing research projects; preparing manuscripts; interviewing for faculty positions or secondary training; and mastering clinical skills.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Third-year fellows continue a half-day of clinic each week.<\/li>\n<li>Third-year fellows can elect additional inpatient or outpatient clinical rotations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First Year First-year fellows are immersed in clinical hematology-oncology.
