The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine provides highest-quality, technologically advanced emergency medical care to ill and injured children in the Triangle at UNC Children’s Emergency Department. Our department has all the specialized equipment needed to treat children and adolescents. And because our team is focused on the care of children, we offer child-friendly features and amenities to ease the fear and anxiety typically associated with an emergency room visit.

The Children’s Emergency Department is a component of UNC Medical Center’s Emergency Department, which treats about 65,000 patients annually, nearly 14,000 of which are children and adolescents under the age of 18. It is home to the Triangle’s only Level I pediatric trauma center, one of only five in the Southeast and 41 across the U.S. recognized by the American College of Surgeons as having highest level of expertise in treating critically injured children.

About one-third of all inpatient admissions to N.C. Children’s Hospital enter via the Emergency Department, making the ED a true gateway for patients with acute medical, surgical and traumatic conditions from across the state to received the specialized care they need when they need it.
